On March 13, 2020, Florida kicked off its journey towards sports betting legislation as lawmakers began negotiating details for the first time. On May 18, 2021, the Florida Senate approved sports betting. On May 19, 2021, the Florida House approved sports betting. This all represented significant progress towards the end goal of full-implemented legalized sports betting.
However, more recently, the legislative process has seen some hurdles emerge. On June 7, 2021, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber opposed sports betting in a letter to the United States Department of the Interior urging it to reject DeSantis’s Seminole compact. Gelber called the compact a “tortured artifice” and stated it violated both state and federal law. In addition, DraftKings and FanDuel filed a ballot initiative on June 24, 2021, that pushes for sports betting to be put up to vote in 2022. Both these sportsbooks and Gelber have claimed that the compact is a corrupt document that is not in the best interest of Floridian residents nor the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) which attempts to provide Native American tribes with a “pathway to greater independence and economic vitality,” per Gelber. Any Floridian legislative plan will need to pass through federal regulations, so it’s increasingly unlikely 2021 is the year that sports betting is implemented in the state.
