FanDuel was one of the first daily fantasy sports websites to launch. Believe it or not, FanDuel.com was live in 2009. FanDuel was the product of a brainstorming session at South by Southwest. The founders had started another company Hubdub and pivoted to FanDuel. The company launched their first championship event in 2010 and went on to secure funding of more than $300 million over the next 5 years. With savvy investments and acquisitions, FanDuel was leading the daily fantasy industry and looked poise to put other companies out of business.

However, DraftKings also raised hundreds of millions of dollars and was far more aggressive with catering to the player and marketing. DraftKings became FanDuel’s primary competitor and it was a neck and neck race for the top position in daily fantasy. Then, disaster struck with the legal controversy surrounding DraftKings and FanDuel players playing on each other’s platform. Both companies looked like they wouldn’t be able to recover and in a last attempt to survive, decided to merge.

However, the FTC blocked the merger, and FanDuel & DraftKings found themselves side by side in court. They were fighting for the survival of DFS, and what we later surmised, the beginnings of legalized gambling across the US.

After settlements with the Massachusetts Attorney General and New York Attorney General, the CEO Nigel Eccles left the company in 2017 and Paddy Power Betfair purchased the company in May 2018. This was most opportune timing as the Supreme Court decision to essentially legalize sports betting across the US would change the trajectory of FanDuel forever. Now, we live in the sports betting era and FanDuel Sportsbook is leading the way. By launching a $500 bonus bet via a FanDuel Sportsbook promo code, FanDuel obtained new users at a fast rate. FanDuel is now one of the top two sports betting sites in the United States. What will come of FanDuel in the years to come? We’ll have to wait and see. If the past is any indication, it’s going to be a fun ride.
