New York Sports Teams
The Empire State has plenty of different teams to wager on. Fans in the state have plenty of favorite teams in the NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, and WNBA. College teams are also popular in the state, but New York law prohibits wagering on any in-state collegiate team.
New York Yankees
It’s impossible to discuss New York sports without mentioning the Yankees. The team is extremely popular throughout the area and is one of the most lucrative franchises in not just the MLB, but all of sports.
The New York Yankees have the distinction of having the most total championships in professional sports, with 27 total World Series titles. The team most recently won the league in 2009 after a 4-2 series win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Also known as the Bronx Bombers, the Yankees are currently partnered with FanDuel Sportsbook as well as Bally Bet Sportsbook.
New York Knicks
The New York Knicks are one of the most popular teams in the New York area. The team plays at Madison Square Garden in Midtown Manhattan, one of the most notorious venues in pro sports.
Despite being one of the most valuable franchises in the NBA, the New York Knicks haven’t been on top of the league in quite some time. In fact, the last time the Knicks were NBA champions was in 1973.
Caesars and DraftKings have made exclusive deals with the Knicks, while BetMGM has partnered with Madison Square Garden.
New York Mets
The New York Mets have a loyal fanbase in the New York area. The team plays at Citi Field in Queens, allowing thousands of fans to see the team throughout the season.
Although partially due to the fact the franchise hasn’t been around as long, the New York Mets haven’t had nearly as much success as the Yankees, with two titles to the team’s name.
Currently, the Mets have a single sports betting partnership with Caesars Sportsbook.
Brooklyn Nets
The Brooklyn Nets are a major NBA franchise, having been originally established in 1967. The Nets host other teams at Barclays Center, a massive venue in Brooklyn.
While the Nets have yet to win an NBA championship, the team made a couple of Finals appearances in the early 2000s. Diehard Brooklyn fans are crossing their fingers for the team’s first championship this year.
FanDuel Sportsbook currently has a deal with the Brooklyn Nets.
Buffalo Bills
With the New York Jets and Giants playing in New Jersey, the Buffalo Bills are the sole NFL team located in New York. The Bills might be most well known for their four consecutive Super Bowl appearances with QB Jim Kelly. The historic franchise plays home games at Highmark Stadium.
While the team had some tough times since those appearances, things are looking up for the Bills. With QB Josh Allen and head coach Sean McDermott, the team is built to compete long into the postseason as the franchise hopes for its very first title.
The Bills have partnered with both FanDuel and Caesars.
Syracuse Orange
When you think of Syracuse sports, the college’s men’s basketball squad likely comes to mind. The school has provided some major NBA stars, such as Derrick Coleman and Carmelo Anthony.
The Syracuse Orange basketball team won an NCAA championship in 2003, and has made six total Final Four appearances. The team currently plays in the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York, the same home of the Syracuse football team. Syracuse football won a national championship in 1959.
Army Black Knights
The Army Black Knights football team had some major success in the past, with five national championships between 1914 and 1946. Unlike Syracuse, who plays in the ACC conference, the Army Black Knights are not affiliated with any conference.
The Black Knights currently play at Michie Stadium in West Point, New York. The team appeared in the 2021 Armed Forces Bowl with a 24-22 win over the Missouri Tigers.
New York Rangers
The New York Rangers have been around since 1927, so they’ve amassed quite a fanbase over the years. Throughout the team’s long history, the Rangers have made the playoffs 59 times with four Stanley Cup championships.
The New York Rangers have established themselves as an Eastern Conference contender in recent years. Like the Knicks, the Rangers host visiting teams at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan.
DraftKings Sportsbook and Caesars Sportsbook currently have betting partnerships with the Rangers.
New York Islanders
The Islanders are another popular option for hockey fans in the New York area. The Islanders play roughly an hour drive from the Rangers, meaning fans in the area have their choice when it comes to picking a favorite hockey team.
Since an incredible four-year Stanley Cup run from 1979 to 1983, the New York Islanders have gone without a championship win. The Islanders are adjusting to a new home stadium with the 2021-2022 season debut of the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.
Currently, the Islanders haven’t made any sports betting partnerships.
Buffalo Sabres
The Buffalo Sabres are another popular New York NHL team, albeit without as much success as the Rangers or Islanders. The team is currently in a bit of a playoff drought, with their last appearance coming in 2011.
Still, Buffalo has a strong fanbase and looks for a bright future in chilly Buffalo. The Sabres currently play in the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York.
The Sabres and FanDuel Online Sportsbook have an ongoing deal.
New York Liberty
The New York Liberty were one of the first 8 franchises in the WNBA during the league’s inaugural season. The team has seen plenty of success since then, with double digit postseason appearances.
Plus, the Liberty have made five WNBA Finals appearances, most recently losing to the Las Vegas Aces in 2023. Like the Nets, the Liberty play home games at Barclays Center.
The New York Liberty currently have a sportsbook partnership with FanDuel.
New York Jets
Although they don’t play in New York, the Jets have their fans in the area. The crowning moment for the Jets was perhaps the team’s major upset in Super Bowl III, a 16-7 win over the Baltimore Colts.
Unfortunately, the team hasn’t returned to the big game since then. The Jets are hoping to turn things around in the future with head coach Robert Saleh.
The Jets have partnered with three sportsbooks: BetMGM, WynnBET, and FanDuel.
New York Giants
Like the Jets, the Giants currently play at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. However, the team is still popular throughout the New York area.
While the Giants have seen success throughout the team’s existence, the Super Bowl runs with QB Eli Manning at the helm are definitely the biggest highlights. Super Bowl XLII, when the Giants took down the then-undefeated New England Patriots, remains a major sports moment.
The Giants have a partnership with DraftKings Online Sportsbook.
New York Sports Betting History
New York sports bettors had to wait quite some time to have access to mobile sportsbooks. There had been numerous attempts at passing NY sports betting bills since 2018 (coinciding with the Supreme Court overturning PASPA), although none of them gained any steam. However, Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr. pushed for legalizing mobile betting in the state for years, pointing out the major potential revenue that could help to solve the state’s budget issues. In 2021, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed online sports betting into the state budget, giving the green light to legal sports wagering in the state. The wheels really started moving in November of 2021, when two bids from FanDuel Sportsbook and Kambi were accepted by the New York State Gaming Commission. This set up nine mobile sport betting platforms to launch in the state: BetMGM Sportsbook, DraftKings Sportsbook, Barstool Sportsbook, Rush Street Interactive, Caesars Sportsbook, WynnBET Sportsbook, Bally Bet Sportsbook, PointsBet Sportsbook, and FanDuel Sportsbook. The tax rate for New York sports betting was set at 51%, easily the highest in the U.S. sports betting industry.
Jan. 8, 2022 saw the official launch of the New York online sports betting market. Four online sportsbooks went live in the state on that day as anyone of legal wagering age could sign up for Caesars NY, FanDuel NY, Rush Street Interactive NY, and DraftKings NY, with the other approved platforms to follow suit shortly after. On July 8th, 2022, Bally Bet Sportsbook officially launched in the state of New York on the six-month anniversary of legal online betting in the area. With Bally Bet Sportsbook rolled out, all nine of the state’s online sports betting apps are now fully available.
