Ohio Sports Betting Excitement Slows After Senator’s Comments (2021 Updates)

Where The Ohio Sports Betting Bill Stands

Ohioans have been anticipating sports betting for quite some time now. With both sides of the State Congress in favor of the betting bill, it is only a matter of time before it is passed. Unfortunately, it is not as easy as it seems.

While there is a bill in the works that passed the State House with ease, the State Senate has had several meetings about the legalization bill but has failed to act on it. The bill has now come up in five separate hearings throughout 2020, and each time nothing seems to have been accomplished.

According to Sen. Ecklund, back in the summer of 2020, there were still some details about the bill that needed to be hashed out. However, no one could really expect this bad of a delay. The end of 2020 was the target for all involved as Ohio looked to compete with neighbors Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.

It seems that the chaos that was the 2020 legislative season was just too much for these lawmakers to get something done. The State Senate still wants to change and rectify a proposal that combines what it wants with what the State House wants. Until this happens, there will be no sports betting in Ohio.

When Will Sports Betting Start in Ohio?

There is no set date, but with how close sports betting is to being legalized and how badly the lawmakers are pushing for it, it seems that February or March would be the date that the lawmakers can get together and pass a co-signed bill by the State House and Senate.

If legislatures can get something done and sports wagering legalized in Q1 of 2021, then there is no reason that Q3/Q4 would not be a realistic date for the launch of sports betting. Ideally, Ohio lawmakers and sportsbooks will want to get in on the NFL and NCAA Football betting during the fall and winter. Therefore, there will be a strong push by regulators to get things up and operating by the start of or during the NFL season.

There is a very strong chance that the Ohio bettors will be able to place wagers on licensed sportsbooks in 2021.

However, things can go wrong. The State Senate can continue to have issues and fail to pass something, maybe even ultimately scrapping all the hard work that has gone into this push. It is also possible that Ohio takes a long time to get regulations and licenses in place. Some states have taken a year or two to get sports betting running following legalization.

One major push for Ohio will be the fact that so many neighboring states have legalized sports betting. The state is losing revenue out to these other states as well as offshore sportsbooks as Ohio bettors can easily find ways to wager on sports without legalization within their state.

What to Expect from Ohio Sports Betting?

The details of the new sports betting bill is up in the air. Although there is speculation around some details, one certain thing is that the Ohio Casino Control Commission will be overseeing sports betting.

Some were pushing for the Ohio Lottery to be in charge of sports wagering, but Sen. Ecklund held strong with his decision. This should help to wager in the state as states that do not have the lottery overseeing sports betting are having more success.

Right now, the speculation around other detail is that there will be an eight percent tax rate, along with a $100k license for five-years at casinos and racinos. There is also another $10K management fee along with a $1K renewal fee.

Ohio will allow sports betting operators to expand their business with more lax laws compared to other states. Expect some of the biggest sports betting companies like FanDuel, DraftKings, PointsBet, and others to enter Ohio as soon as possible.

Although Sen. Ecklund is telling everyone to slow down on sports betting, there is confidence that the bill will officially pass by the end of 2020.

Projecting How to Bet on Sports in Ohio (Not Available Yet)

While Ohio has yet to legalize sports gambling, the day is coming. There will be a vote at the end of the year on a bill that would allow for mobile and online sports betting as well as in-person betting at casinos. It seems that both chambers of the state congress, The House and Senate, want to get the bill passed and are working together to make that happen. So when sports betting does become legalized in Ohio, how will you do it?

Create an Account

When creating an account you must make sure that you are connected to wifi/using a device with geolocation turned on. The sportsbook needs to confirm that your location is indeed in Ohio before allowing you to place the bet.

Creating an account on any of the major sportsbooks is pretty much the same. The crucial information you will need on hand is E-mail, address, date of birth, full name, and social security number. The reason that such personal information is needed is that the sportsbook needs to confirm that you are who you say you are and that you are of legal age to bet. You must be 21 years or older to wager.

Do not forget to use one of the many promotions offered by Lineups.com when creating your account. These promotions contain $1,000s in free bonuses or risk-free bets.

Once the sportsbook has indeed been able to verify your age and location, you should be all ready to go for the next step.

Many sportsbooks even offer bill pay if that method works best for you.
Many of the promotions require you to deposit some form of money to activate (around $5 to $10), so once you deposit the cash and the transaction goes through, your promotion should be activated.

Placing a Bet, Creating your Betslip

Every sportsbook has roughly the same setup when it comes to placing bets. Once you find the bet that you would like to go with you will click on it and the bet will appear on your betslip. Once there, you can enter the amount of money you would like to wager on the bet and the betslip will tell you either the payout or profit associated with the amount of money you are wagering.

You will find that sportsbooks have tons of different sports and ways to bet, including live betting. So, make sure to sift through the possible wagers and go ahead and fill your betslip with all the bets you want to go with. You can place the money on each as a single bet, or create a parlay which is a multi-tier bet where every single tier or leg of the bet needs to hit in order to win money.
