Ohio Sports Betting Is Coming Soon! (2022 Updates)

Ohio Sports Betting Should Be Coming Soon!

Sports bettors in Ohio won’t have to wait too much longer for legal sports betting. On December 8th, 2021, a sports betting bill was passed through the Senate by a whopping margin of 31-1. Not too long afterward, the House approved the bill by another staggering margin, this time by 72-12. On December 22nd, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed the state’s sports betting bill to put in motion the preparatory process for a 2022 launch.

The tax rate for sports wagering in the Buckeye State will be 10%, with predictions that as much as $90 million could be generated for the state annually. The newly passed bill also includes the legalization of eSports betting and a requirement regarding league data. Additionally, brick-and-mortar sportsbooks may operate in counties with fewer than 100,000 total residents. The Ohio sports wagering industry looks to be supervised by the Ohio Casino Control Commission. This is a huge relief for sports bettors in Ohio, who have seen numerous failed attempts at seeing a sports betting bill passed. In fact, 2020 saw five different attempts at passing a sports wagering bill, although nothing came from it.

The new expectation is that sports betting will be live in Ohio in 2022, likely the second half of the year, and sports fans in the state can rejoice about the latest news.

When Will Sports Betting Start in Ohio?

With the passing of the Ohio sports betting bill, everything seems to be in place for a full rollout in 2022. Both online and brick-and-mortar sports betting will be available if everything goes according to plan. With the passage of the bill behind them, sportsbook operators looking to launch in Ohio are awaiting applications from the Ohio Control Commission to gain licensing in the state. Before operators can apply, Ohio lawmakers must first finalize the rules and regulations associated with the bill, which they have yet to do. Lawmakers are expected to put the final touches on the market rules very soon and operators should be able to apply for licensing any day now.

A likely reason for the bill finally pushing through for Ohio sports wagering is the success seen in neighboring states. Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Michigan have all launched legal sports wagering and have seen plenty of success. Additionally, the possible loss of revenue to offshore sports betting platforms as Ohio residents wait for legal options likely helped the bill come to fruition.

What to Expect from Ohio Sports Betting?

Governor Mike DeWine has officially signed Ohio sports wagering into law, meaning a full launch is coming in 2022. The Ohio Casino Control Commission will be overseeing sports betting, and it’s guaranteed to start rolling by January 1st, 2023, but likely before. Some were pushing for the Ohio Lottery to be in charge of sports wagering, but Sen. Ecklund held strong with his decision. This should be beneficial in the area as states that do not have the lottery overseeing sports betting are having more success.

As lawmakers continue to iron out the details, Ohio State University has addressed the commission to push for limits on collegiate sports wagering. Their requests include limiting betting on collegiate sports to just football and basketball, prohibiting prop betting, and increased penalties for coercion and cheating. It is yet to be determined what the Casino Control Commission will decide to do with the requests.

Regardless, Ohio sports betting should be quite lucrative once it rolls out. Some are predicting that the entire market could bring in $1 billion in total revenue while generating $90 million in tax dollars at a 10% rate.

Ohio will allow sports betting operators to expand their business with more lax laws compared to other states. Expect some of the biggest sports betting companies like FanDuel, DraftKings, PointsBet, and others to enter Ohio as soon as possible.

Create an Account

When creating an account you must make sure that you are connected to WiFi/using a device with geolocation turned on. The sportsbook needs to confirm that your location is indeed in Ohio before allowing you to place the bet.

Creating an account on any of the major sportsbooks is pretty much the same. The crucial information you will need on hand is email, address, date of birth, full name, and social security number. The reason that such personal information is needed is that the sportsbook needs to confirm that you are who you say you are and that you are of legal age to bet. You must be 21 years or older to wager.

Do not forget to use one of the many promotions offered by Lineups.com when creating your account. These promotions contain $1,000s in free bonuses or risk-free bets.

Once the sportsbook has indeed been able to verify your age and location, you should be all ready to go for the next step.

Every sportsbook will have a deposit button for your account to quickly and easily place money into your account and get to betting. To deposit money into your account you can use tons of different methods, but the most common are credit card, debit card, and PayPal. Many sportsbooks even offer bill pay if that method works best for you.
Many of the promotions require you to deposit some form of money to activate (around $5 to $10), so once you deposit the cash and the transaction goes through, your promotion should be activated.

Placing a Bet, Creating your Betslip

Every sportsbook has roughly the same setup when it comes to placing bets. Once you find the bet that you would like to go with you will click on it and the bet will appear on your betslip. Once there, you can enter the amount of money you would like to wager on the bet and the betslip will tell you either the payout or profit associated with the amount of money you are wagering.

You will find that sportsbooks have tons of different sports and ways to bet, including live betting. So, make sure to sift through the possible wagers and go ahead and fill your betslip with all the bets you want to go with. You can place the money on each as a single bet, or create a parlay which is a multi-tier bet where every single tier or leg of the bet needs to hit in order to win money.

It allows for some crazy profitable bets if the team you are betting on goes crazy. It is a refreshing and fun new idea in the sports betting world.

PointsBet is constantly running promotions in hopes of gaining new users to try out their unique gambling options. With Lineups.com you can get $500 of risk-free bets on traditional bets as well as $1,500 in risk-free bets on their points betting style of wagers.
