Should You Bet on the Charlotte Hornets to win the 2026 NBA Finals?

Since the start of 2026, the Charlotte Hornets have been one the best teams in the NBA by any statistical measure. The Hornets lead the NBA in net rating (+10.5) with a 33-16 record since the start of January, and they’ve been so good that oddsmakers at some books have introduced a market on “any NBA Play-in team to win a first-round series” with the Hornets clearly in mind.

Now entering the Play-in as the No. 9 seed, Charlotte will have to beat the Miami Heat and then win a road game at the Philadelphia 76ers or Orlando Magic to secure the No. 8 seed and a first-round matchup with the Detroit Pistons.

Despite their incredible run over the past few months, the Hornets are getting +146 odds to pull off that uphill battle. In five seasons of the Play-in Tournament, the No. 9 seed is 3-7 in terms of winning two games to grab the No. 8 seed.

Of course, this isn’t your typical underdog. The Hornets starting lineup has been fantastic since Moussa Diabate grabbed hold of the center position, Kon Knueppel set a rookie record for made 3-pointers and is a lead candidate for Rookie of the Year, and LaMelo Ball is playing the best ball of his career.

Should you bet the Hornets to make the playoffs, to win a first-round series, or even to win the Eastern Conference? We break it down below.

Charlotte Hornets to Win Eastern Conference?

The Hornets announced their arrival in early January with impressive wins over the Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, and Houston Rockets. However, sandwiched in their run are a couple of losses to a Detroit Pistons team that would be their first-round matchup.

Detroit and Charlotte got into a brief brawl on Feb. 9 and in the final matchup of the season, the Pistons exerted their will by shutting down the Hornets in a 25-10 fourth quarter for a 118-100 win. That game was played in Charlotte. Detroit out-scored the Hornets by 20 points in the paint and shot 58% inside the arc. Those types of dominant numbers aren’t to be taken lightly in a playoff context.

As good as the Hornets have been this season, they’re highly unlikely to beat the Pistons in this particular matchup. Detroit will be highly motivated to prove something after pundits and oddsmakers have installed other teams above them in the Eastern Conference pecking order, and teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers have ostensibly lost games to avoid the Boston Celtics and sit on the Pistons side of the bracket.

Betting the Hornets at +150 to win a pair of Play-in games is a good wager. Betting the Hornets at +460 to win a first-round series is a poor value considering they would offer much more upside on the spread or moneyline in road games against Detroit in that series.

Best Odds: Charlotte Hornets to win Eastern Conference

Charlotte Hornets to Win NBA Finals?

Backing the Hornets to win the Eastern Conference would be a leap of faith in terms of regular season results. Charlotte has been fantastic against some of the top teams in the NBA, but recent results have shown cracks in the armor, including decisive defeats against some of the best teams in the East.

Knueppel has hit a bit of a rookie wall down the stretch and Ball’s freewheeling style isn’t necessarily adaptive to playoff basketball. Charlotte lost two Play-in games by 27 and 29 points with Ball at the helm in 2021 and 2022.

According to sportsbooks, Charlotte is the fifth-best team in the East with 18/1 odds to win the conference. Projections at basketball-reference.com give the Hornets a modest 2.4% chance to win the East and ESPN’s Power Index is higher at 4.5% which is ahead of the No. 4 Cavs (4.2%).

Those projections are overweighting regular season results and underrating postseason experience and playoff atmosphere. The Hornets are not a good bet to win multiple playoff series as a young team that is on the rise, but far from ready to win at that level.
