Should You Bet on the Miami Heat to win the 2026 NBA Finals?
While they enter the Eastern Conference Play-in Tournament as the lowest seed in the bracket with the longest odds to make the NBA Playoffs, you can never count out the Miami Heat.
Eric Spoelstra is one of the best playoff coaches in history and his team can shift shapes in each quarter to give the opposition fits. Miami would have to win a Play-in matchup at the red-hot Charlotte Hornets to stay alive, then win at the Orlando Magic or Philadelphia 76ers to grab the No. 8 seed in the bracket.
Of the 10 candidates in five years, only one No. 10 seed has pulled off road wins in the Play-in Tournament to make the NBA playoffs.
Could Miami pull off another miraculous run and not only make the playoffs, but make some noise with a first-round upset?
Miami Heat to Win Eastern Conference?
It was only three years ago that Jimmy Butler led the Miami Heat to a 4-1 upset of the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks to open the playoffs. Since then, the Heat lost 4-1 and 4-0 to the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers in the opening round of the playoffs.
This year, they have +470 odds to make the playoffs and their reward would be a matchup with the top-seeded Detroit Pistons. Miami is 1-2 against Detroit this year, although the last two losses came on New Years Day and on the second leg of a back-to-back set.
Bam Adebayo would be an intriguing player to watch in a series against Jalen Duren and the Pistons. Adebayo could contain Duren defensively and stretch out the big man with his improved shooting. Miami’s egalitarian offense would give Detroit’s defense some problems with Norman Powell, Tyler Herro, and Jaime Jaquez Jr. all capable of creating their own shot.
Detroit has some flaws offensively that Spoelstra’s staff could certainly exploit with creative defenses and other playoff tricks. Cade Cunningham (lung) only recently came back from injury and that makes this No. 1 seed a bit more vulnerable than usual.
Betting Miami at +1500 to win a first-round series would make sense as a very, very small wager, but you might as well back the Heat at +470 to navigate the Play-in tournament with a bigger wager if you think they can pull it off.
Miami and Charlotte have gone back and forth with some blowout results in recent meetings and the Heat has the benefit of playoff experience. The 76ers and Magic are wounded and dealing with chemistry issues that Miami could exploit, so it’s not out of the question.
Best Odds: Miami Heat to win Eastern Conference
Miami Heat to Win NBA Finals?
Taking Miami as a longshot in the Play-in or first round is one thing, but backing the Heat at 200/1 to win the Eastern Conference is foolish.
Miami simply has not shot in a series against any of the top teams in the East other than Detroit. The Boston Celtics have demolished the Heat this season, the Cleveland Cavaliers have too much fire power, and the New York Knicks have advantages everywhere in that potential matchup.
Projections at the ESPN Power Index give the Heat the lowest chance (0.1%) of any Eastern Conference team to make the Finals. Playoff projections at basketball-reference.com are slightly better at 0.2% which is ahead of Orlando (0.1%) but not inspiring.
Miami is still a franchise under reconstruction and seeking the next building block. Pat Riley and the front office are likely looking ahead to free agency and trade targets this summer when they can try and get their next difference-making star in the building.
