The History of the Washington Lottery

Washington 1In 1982, Washington became the sixteenth state to enact lottery legislation. They followed Arizona and preceded Colorado by one year to be one of the earliest western states to provide lottery games to their residents.

1251 was passed by the state legislature on June 30, and then the Washington Senate added their approval one day later. Governor John Spellman signed H.B. 1251 into law on July 16.

The first Washington Lottery tickets were sold later that year, with the Pot O’ Gold $1 scratch-off ticket launching lottery games on November 15. In January 2014, the Washington Lottery began selling draw game tickets.

The first was the Daily Game, and then later that summer, ticket sales were started for the Washington Lotto. Initially, there was a single weekly drawing for the Washington Lotto, but in 1987, they added a second Wednesday drawing.

The Washington Lottery expanded the Lotto game again in 2005, adding a third drawing on Mondays. In recent years, total ticket sales for the Washington Lottery have inched closer to breaking the $1 billion mark.

The most recent statistics place the Washington Lottery in 25th place overall for revenue by U.S. states with lotteries. With neighboring Oregon recently passing a proposal to allow online sports betting, there is some sense that Oregon will add online lottery sales as well.

This may turn out to be the impetus Washington’s lawmakers need to revisit discussions about opening up the state’s lottery system to online ticket sales. To date, none of the games available on the Washington Lottery can be purchased online.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t special incentives to having a free account and downloading the Washington Lottery app. Let’s look at some features of the app, plus discuss a few popular games you can research on the website or using the app on your mobile device.
