Will these Eagles Soar in 2018? Boston College Looks to Build on a Strong 2017 Finish Seven win seasons seem to be an ominous trend for the Boston College Eagle football team. Four times during the last five seasons that has been their final won/loss record. 2017 started out looking like they might break that trend, but not in a positive fashion.

Steve Addazio's squad was 2-4 after a half dozen games, and could have easily been a one-win team. So, which Boston College gridiron team will show up in 2018? The team that barely escaped with a win against Northern Illinois, or the team that lambasted Florida State 35-3? BC lost only twice by a total of 10 points to finish 2017, so hope is in the air for these Eagles to soar.

The Offense Can Fly High

AJ Dillon proved to be a big-time talent. He will have to be in 2018 because the position is thin at running back. At quarterback, all hopes for the Eagle's offense to fly high rest on second-year starter Anthony Brown. Boston College doesn't live by the big-play theory. They want to control the ball, control the clock, and thereby control the game.

As a true freshman, Brown did a commendable job calling signals. He will need to step to the next level to boost BC's chances of contending for the ACC Atlantic Division. There hasn't been a top-flight wide receiver surface yet, but TE Tommy Sweeney has play-on-Sunday talent. Expect Sweeney to be a huge part of the Eagle's passing game.

To Soar the Defense must Swarm

Boston College's defense was more like a sieve in the first half the season. They gave up over 30 points per game during a three-game September losing streak. However, just like the offense they seemed to turn a corner. Over the last five regular season games, BC's D stuffed the opposition under 20 points every game.

The Eagles will look to build on that late season success. They have one of the toughest squad of defensive backs in the nation. Lukas Denis stole seven passes out of the air, and the BC defense ranked third in the nation in pass defense efficiency. Their problem in the long run was just that; the long run.

Too often the Boston College defense would play strong, only to be burnt by a home run rushing touchdown. If BC can contain their opponents rushing attack, they stand to dramatically reduce their defensive scoring average. When you give up fewer points, you take a lot of pressure off your offense. That will bode well for Addazio's ball control style.

How high these Eagles will soar will depend on how well they kick off their new season. If they lumber out to a poor start again, they will damage their chances at high-profile bowl game, let alone a challenge to the ACC's elite teams. With home games against three of these elite teams, Louisville, Clemson and Miami, these Eagles will look to soar in 2018.
