Holiday had some holes to fill for 2018 with the early departure of QB Chase Litton (NFL) and the resignation of offensive coordinator Bill Legg. New offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey brings a dynamic passing attack from his OC experiences at Sam Houston State and Nevada. To add depth to the Herd’s untested QB group and to give Cramsy’s scheme a chance, Holiday brought in graduate transfer and former Wagner QB Alex Thomson. However, it wasn’t until the first game of 2018 when redshirt freshman Isaiah Greene won a game-day decision at QB. Most of the 2017 starting offensive line returns and should open up opportunities for a solid running game, supporting an overall balanced offensive attack.

Promoted linebackers coach Adam Fuller fills in the defensive coordinator role left by Chuck Heater after he departed for Maryland at the end of last season. Linebacker Chase Hancock leads 9 key starters returning from one of Marshall’s strongest defenses in recent years. Defensive tackles Ryan Bee and Channing Hames, both of whom combined for 50 tackles in 2017, should keep the middle of the defense stout. To compensate for the departure of last year's big defensive ends, expect Fuller to scheme with his linebackers and introduce the "Fox" position to utilize the number of hybrid DE/OLB players available this season. Chris Jackson, a star cornerback from last season, will be one to watch as he takes on the best receivers opposing offenses can offer. Overall, expect Marshall to field a bend-but-don’t-break defense and a flexible offense that can spread out and still pound inside. Prediction: 10 wins.
