The TCU Horned Frogs are entering their 7th season in the Big-12 conference. The program knocked on the door and impressed the nation in 2011, up seeding Texas A & M to partake within a stronger conference. Their leadup to this position is nothing short of extraordinary and the program is once again poised for breakout in 2018. Key-holder Gary Patterson is only a few pieces away from building his roster into a high-energy threat for the conference title. Retention and a strong recruiting class keeps the program on track for sound levels of production in 2018.

The untested will be placed in heavy usage roles this season. Shawn Robinson is only a sophomore, but he will gain his wings as the leader of the offense. Robinson comes from a deeply-rooted football background from his playing days in De Soto, TX. This region and area are home to some great talents, which bodes well to ready him for his new role. Robinson's athleticism is what makes him a standalone talent. He can get the job done on the ground with proficiency, leading for arm talent to become a new feature within his game. The offense's greatest assets might be the development of transfer players. The guard and tackle positions are occupied by two transfers that have earned their starting roles. This form of homegrown development is also seen in the backfield and at the receiver positions. Most of the roster contains players that have seen the field and have learned the system, creating a knowledge base that will limit turmoil and confusion for this offense in 2018.

Operating out of a 4-2-5 defensive scheme, this side of the ball remains stout at the outsides. Much of the starter replacement comes at the interior, with two new defensive tackles and a weak-side linebacker adapting to an increased workload. There are senior and junior talents sprinkled throughout all levels of the defense, creating a reliable core for the younger players to learn from. Taking this format in the Big-12 conference is what helps TCU differentiate themselves for the opposing offense. They can slot smaller guys into backer and end positions to increase their speed or spread their size upfront. These defensive settings are instruments used to space the field, often confusing the opposition. The greatest depth increases came on defense, where 12 of the 23 enrollees now reside. While this defense is mythic, it often presents a change of pace for new faces. Holding the veteran players accountable will continue to spread the TCU way throughout the practice and playing field.

The TCU schedule is non-forgiving, which will test the Frogs throughout the season. A non-conference addition against Ohio State is a welcomed opportunity for the team to produce at the level they have become accustomed to. A mid-season bout with Oklahoma is another contest to keep an eye on. When all is said and done, quarterback consistencies will write the storybook on the 2018 season.
