It’s taken the entire 2026 PGA Tour season, but the main event has finally arrived as the PGA Tour heads to Greensboro, N.C. at Sedgefield Country Club. It’s the final PGA Tour event before the FedEx Cup Playoffs begin. Let’s start our weekly preview with a look at Wyndham Championship odds.
The Wyndham Championship really does lend itself to confident betting. Its high concentration of eight par 4s in the 400-450 yard range, funneled approach shots from the 100-175 yard range, and nuanced, undulated Donald Ross-designed Bermuda greens have produced repeatable results for accurate putting specialists. It’s a great week to lean heavily on course and comp course history. As we’ve seen at recent summer birdie fests, it should reward elite putters and wedge players with emphasis especially on Driving Accuracy and Bermuda Putting.

With the beginning of the FedEx Cup Playoffs looming next week, most elite players have opted to skip this week and instead rest up before the three-week playoff push, which starts in Memphis. However, with the new FedEx Cup Playoff qualifications reducing from the top 125 to the top 70, we’ll see a far more competitive middle tier of talent than ever before at this event.
Relative to past years at this event, there is a surprising top-tier of stars heading to Greensboro. Defending champion Cameron Young is the lone OWGR top-15 player in the field, but a total of six top-25 players will tee it up this week, including Ben Griffin, Aaron Rai, Justin Thomas, Ryan Gerard, and Hideki Matsuyama.
In the next tier, Patrick Cantlay, Jackson Koivun, Sepp Straka, Tom Kim, Harris English, and Kristoffer Reitan also figure to round out the list of betting favorites this week.
The Wyndham Championship is one of the most underrated events on the PGA Tour, with arguably the most consequential stakes of any tournament. It is the last event of the regular season, and therefore the players’ last chance to earn FedEx Cup points and solidify their standing for the following season. Everyone will be motivated for a spot in the top-70 to secure a spot in the FedEx St. Jude Championship field for the first round of the playoffs next week.
Unsurprisingly, every player who currently ranks between 60th and 90th in the FedEx Cup Playoffs is in the field this week. Prior to the conclusion of the Rocket Classic, the Last 5 in (65-70th) are: Matti Schmid, Steven Fisk, Jordan Smith, Ricky Castillo, Michael Thorbjornsen, and Jackson Koivun. Notables who are currently on the outside looking in and need a strong week at the Wyndham Championship include Johnny Keefer, Jason Day, Keegan Bradley, Jackson Suber, Tony Finau, and Brooks Koepka.
2025 champion Cameron Young is back for his title defense, spoiling my Nico Echavarria hunch in very convincing fashion. Other past winners of the Wyndham Championship joining him this week include Aaron Rai, Lucas Glover, JT Poston, and Webb Simpson.

INTRODUCTION TO SEDGEFIELD CC
A mainstay on the PGA Tour since 2008, Sedgefield Country Club is your prototypical positional golf course, which rewards players for hitting fairways and penalizes any wayward tee shots with thick rough and tricky angles from tight tree lines.
With a heavy concentration of par-4s under 450 yards, players who are dialed in with their wedges and short irons have repeatedly found success at this event. Moreover, the most skilled long-term putters have proven to separate from the field on these tricky Donald Ross greens.
How It Breaks Down
As a par 70, Sedgefield CC features a standard mix of two par 5s, four par 3s, and 12 par 4s. The 7,131 yardage falls just below TOUR average from a per-hole standpoint. What makes Sedgefield CC so unique, and so repeatable for top course horses, is its concentration of short par 4s. Eight par-4s measure between 400-450 yards. That in turn has produced an average of nearly 30% of approach shots from 150-175 yards, well above the TOUR average.
Beyond the par 4s, the course features two very reachable par 5s and two short par 3s under 175 yards. Contenders have historically capitalized and scored in what has typically been known as a birdie-fest most years.
Just six holes at Sedgefield CC have a scoring average above par. That includes the two 500+ yard par 4s and two 225+ yard par 3s. The 507-yard par-4 18th is the most difficult hole on the course. It has produced some very exciting finishes on Sundays, recently including the six-man playoff in 2021.
Traits And Recent Notable Facts
A similar story to what we just saw at last week’s Rocket Classic, Sedgefield CC provides an easy layout that should produce a winning score near -20 and reward the player who catches the hottest putter. Compared to other PGA Tour courses, Sedgefield CC has ranked as the easiest course for SG: APP every year since 2015. Elite iron players should unload on these pins for birdie opportunities. But average iron players can still manage spike approach weeks.
With angular, more narrow fairways than Tour average and tricky Bermuda rough, there is a large emphasis on keeping the ball in the fairway. That has drastically mitigated any advantage from longer hitters, with forced layups throughout. Sedgefield CC has routinely ranked top 10 in scoring difficulty from outside the fairway. Plodders who can remain in control of their ball off the tee should have a leg up on the field.

COURSE HISTORY AND COURSE COMPS
Similar to Donald Ross’ Detroit Golf Club, I’m viewing long-term putting — especially on Bermuda greens — as a prerequisite skill set for success at this event. On the complete other side of the putting spectrum, compared to an event like the 3M Open, this is not a week where any given player can catch a streaky putter and win. Combine that putting emphasis with a concentration of wedge shots and a premium on driving accuracy, and we start to see a very repeatable list of names in contention year over year.
Course history has proven highly predictive of future success at this event. Course stalwarts like Webb Simpson, Si Woo Kim, Patrick Reed, Billy Horschel, and Kevin Kisner have each done well regardless of preceding form. That group alone has accounted for 24 top-10 finishes and four wins over the last nine years.
Of that group, Webb Simpson still stands out as the king of Sedgefield CC. He’s finished inside the top 10 in 12 out of 16 career appearances, including a current stretch of six consecutive finishes inside the top 7 from 2017-2023. Without any discernible form last season, he still managed a solid T27 finish here in 2025. It is one of, if not the, most dominant displays of course history by any individual on the PGA Tour. Expectations will be more tempered for Webb leading into this week as he has just one top-20 finish in the past year; however, he did enter the 2023 Wyndham in similar form and still managed a T5 finish. After Simpson, the top-10 players in this field in terms of course history include Cameron Young, Billy Horschel, Sungjae Im, Mac Meissner, Denny McCarthy, Ben Griffin, Jackson Koivun, Tom Kim, and Aaron Rai.
There are nine players who have avoided missing the cut here over the last five years with a minimum of three appearances: Christian Bezuidenhout, Eric Cole, Mac McGreevy, Seamus Power, Sungjae Im, Michael Kim, Matti Schmid, Billy Horschel, and Brendon Todd.
As a testament to just how sticky course history is here, 14 players have recorded multiple top-15 finishes over the last five years: Sungjae Im, Ben Griffin, Eric Cole, Mac Meissner, Aaron Rai, Beau Hossler, Davis Thompson, Stephan Jaeger, JT Poston, Denny McCarthy, Billy Horschel, Adam Svensson, Webb Simpson, and Brendon Todd.
A few other notables with a top-10 finish in one prior Wyndham Championship start include Jackson Koivun, Trace Crowe, and Matt McCarty.
Course Comps
I always weigh comp course history highly in my weekly models, but the correlation on comp short, easy, Bermuda tracks is as strong here as any other course on the PGA TOUR. So, I’ll put a significant premium on comp course history this week in an effort to overlook results on driver-heavy or difficult scoring venues.
We have many options for comps to Sedgefield CC, but Harbour Town, Waialae CC, and Sea Island Resort stand out as the three best. All fit the sub-7,200 yardage, Bermuda greens, easy scoring conditions, emphasis on driving accuracy, and overlapping success from players like Webb Simpson, Russell Henley, and Kevin Kisner.
In addition to these, I also like TPC River Highlands, TPC Deere Run, and Colonial CC as angular, positional courses that emphasize accuracy and precision with short-to-mid irons.
Detroit Golf Club and East Lake each share the same Donald Ross connection and are also worth a closer look, particularly for reference, putting on similarly designed greens. Oak Hill and Pinehurst are also worth referencing from a short-game perspective as recent Donald Ross venues.
Combine performance across this list, and the top-10 players in Comp Course History here are Ben Griffin, Mac Meissner, Aaron Rai, Patrick Cantlay, Cameron Young, Justin Thomas, Davis Thompson, Michael Thorbjornsen, Doug Ghim, and Harry Hall.

Although Sedgefield CC has proven the easiest course on the PGA Tour to gain strokes on approach, it’s still very much a point-and-shoot golf course. The best iron players in the field have typically contended. The top-10 players in SG: APP entering this week are Tom Kim, Ben Kohles, Alex Fitzpatrick, Joel Dahmen, Jackson Suber, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Tom Hoge, Patrick Cantlay, William Mouw, and Lucas Glover.
While SG: OTT has proven relatively inconsequential at this event, strength in positioning on a shorter course goes a long way in maximizing scoring opportunities for contenders. The top-10 in SG: OTT on short, positional courses this week are Ben Kohles, Austin Smotherman, Joel Dahmen, Jackson Koivun, Patrick Cantlay, Brooks Koepka, Sepp Straka, Jordan Smith, Keith Mitchell, and Chris Kirk.
The recipe for success at Sedgefield CC simply boils down to hitting a high clip of fairways and greens in regulation and then making putts. Total SG: Putting, SG: Putting (Bermuda), and 3-Putt Avoidance have all been highly predictive. The top-10 putters weighted across those key categories are Jackson Koivun, Denny McCarthy, Eric Cole, Matt Kuchar, Mac Meissner, Vince Whaley, Maverick McNealy, Ben Griffin, Beau Hossler, and Mackenzie Hughes.
Looking broadly across these three key categories of Driving Accuracy, SG: APP, and Weighted Putting, just seven players rank top-50 in each: Jackson Koivun, Patrick Cantlay, Michael Kim, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Lee Hodges, Matt McCarty, and Eric Cole.
Honing in on the key categories of Prox: 100-175, Comp Course History, Fairways Gained, SG: OTT (Positional Courses) and Weighted Putting, seven players rate above average: Jackson Koivun, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, Ryan Gerard, Brian Harman, JT Poston, and Lee Hodges.
Correlations
Looking at the correlation charts this week, there is a clear emphasis on approach play and putting when compared to the Tour average. SG: APP, Total Proximity, SG: Short Game and SG: P each make significant jumps inside the top 10 of importance at Sedgefield CC. Further, the next stat just outside the top 10 at Sedgefield CC is 3-Putt Avoidance, a testament to the severely undulated and sloping Donald Ross greens. On the other hand, Par-3 Scoring, Par-5 Scoring and Par-4: 450-500 take the largest steps back in terms of importance.
Only seven players in the field rank above average in each of the above 10 key stat categories: Cameron Young, Jackson Koivun, Patrick Cantlay, Lee Hodges, Ryan Gerard, Jordan Smith, JT Poston, Ben Kohles, Justin Thomas, and Michael Brennan.

Profiling a Wyndham Championship winner
The Wyndham Championship is one of the most straightforward events on the PGA Tour to handicap each season, without fail. The exact same profile of player continues to win this event every year: Accurate ball strikers who are putting well and have a great long-term track record on comp positional courses, including Sedgefield Country Club itself. It has been favorable to Bermuda specialists, and particularly to those who have close Carolina ties.
A deeper analysis of the recent winners of this event reveals an even more interesting trend: This is the week of the bounce-back. Five of the last six winners of the Wyndham Championship had an uncharacteristically poor start in the event immediately preceding their win. Cameron Young and Lucas Glover missed the cut in their last start before their Wyndham Championship wins. Aaron Rai, Kevin Kisner, and Jim Herman finished outside the top-60 in the week before their wins here. I’m not saying you can only win the Wyndham Championship if you are coming off of a bad week, but due to the specific skill sets needed to perform well here, it has always set up for an ideal buy-low spot from a betting standpoint.
Why Ben Griffin Will Win
Any way you slice it, the trends and forces of the universe all favor Ben Griffin this week. He is looking for a bounce-back after a surprising missed cut at the Rocket Classic, but his game did not look far off, missing the cut by just one stroke.
Griffin is a North Carolina local, growing up in Chapel Hill and graduating from the University of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is within a one hour drive of Greensboro, a similar proximity which helped Wake Forest graduates Cameron Young and Webb Simpson capture their victories at this event. Lucas Glover, Kevin Kisner, and JT Poston also credited their ties to the greater Carolina area as beneficial when navigating such familiar agronomy.
That familiarity has been evident for Ben Griffin thus far in his career, as he’s finished 4th, T7, and T11 over his first four Wyndham Championship starts. Griffin is trending well to keep that trend going, as he’s finished top-20 in seven of his last 10 starts leading in. He is an ideal course fit for Sedgefield CC, ranking 5th overall in my model and top-10 across the key categories of SG: TOT (L36), SG: ARG, SG: P (L36 & Bermuda), and Comp Course History.
Griffin’s elite putting skills has translated across all Donald Ross venues, not just Sedgefield CC. In 10 career starts across Ross’ Detroit Golf Club, Aronimink Golf Club, East Lake Golf Club, and Sedgefield Country Club, he has eight top-30 finishes and six top-15s.
The time appears to be now for Ben Griffin to claim his first win of 2026 after stacking three victories in 2025.

In my model, I’m emphasizing SG: APP, Comp Course History, Par-4 400-450, Prox: 100-175, and Weighted Putting (L36, Bermuda, and 3-Putt Avoidance), followed by a more balanced mix of SG: Ball Striking (<7,200 Yard Courses), Fairways Gained, and Birdie or Better Gained.
Model Favorites
For the first time ever, the prodigal son Jackson Koivun tops my model. Despite bursting onto the scene with authority to win his first career PGA Tour event in his third start as a pro at the 3M Open, he’ll still have plenty to play for in Greensboro. Koivun needs another solid showing to secure a spot in the FedEx Cup Playoffs and earn a captain’s selection for the Presidents Cup.
After Koivun, the rest of my model’s top 10 features Cameron Young, Patrick Cantlay, Mac Meissner, Ben Griffin, Aaron Rai, Brooks Koepka, Davis Thompson, Ben Kohles, and Doug Ghim.
When odds open on Monday, I’ll center my card around the man I expect to win the 2026 Wyndham Championship, Ben Griffin, but will also leave room on the card for players like Alex Fitzpatrick, Ben Kohles, and Emiliano Grillo if odds are appealing.
