Matchup Preview

Boston took last night’s nail-biter 6-5 on a walk-off, 2-out hit from Marco Hernandez. The two teams will match up again tonight at Fenway at 7:10 PM ET. Despite taking the loss, the White Sox played surpassingly well for a team given +150 ML odds before last night’s game. Chicago will be sending Carson Fulmer to the hill tonight, as Boston calls on the left-handed David Price.

Fulmer, just recently recalled up Triple-A on June 19th, is 1-1 on the season with an ERA of 6.35. He’s done all his Major League work of 2019 out of the bullpen thus far. He’s currently averaging 10.3 Ks per 9 innings. He’s never pitched at Fenway before, but in 2 games totaling 1 inning of work against the Red Sox in his career, he’s given up 3 earned runs on 2 hits.

David Price is 4-2 on the year with an ERA of 3.39. He gave up 1 run in 5.0 innings of work in his last start. In 16 starts against the White Sox in his career, he’s posted and ERA of 3.45 and gone 6-5.

Red Sox Analysis

7-3 in their last 10, the Red Sox are keeping pace in the ultra-competitive AL Central. While still 8.0 games back, they’re doing all they can to stay contenders. Pitching has been unusually iffy for the Red Sox on the year, but their bats have been astounding.

Nunez, Benintendi, Devers, Holy, and Vasquez are all hitting .300 or above over the last week. Bogaerts went 2-4 with a walk in last night’s contest, and Bradley Jr. went deep. The Red Sox haven’t had much exposure to Fulmer, but Chavis is 1-1 against him and Betts, Devers, and Nunez are all without a hit against him.

Price comes into this matchup with a 1.101 WHIP and a WAR of 1.8. His current ERA of 3.39 is higher than his 3.26 career, but he’s still made an impact for the Red Sox this year. He pitches this White Sox lineup well, but there are a few exceptions. Cordell, Garcia, Jay, McCann, and Rondon have all proved they can hold their own against him.

White Sox Analysis

At 36-40, it may not seem like a stellar season for the White Sox, but after finishing 62-100 last season, it’s a huge improvement. The White Sox are slowly putting themselves in a position to be contenders again, whether it’s this year or in the next few years, it’ll be exciting to watch.

Moncada, Cordell, Anderson, Garcia, and McCann have all been hot lately, hitting above .300 over the least week. McCann has taken Price deep once in 5 at bats, and Rondon is hitting .400 off of him through 5 ABs. Abroad is hitting only .130 off of Price, but has taken him deep once and posted 3 RBIs.

This will mark Carson Fulmer’s first start for the White Sox on the year. He’s posted a good K-rate thus far in the season, but his ERA is nothing to write home about. Strikeouts don’t really matter when they come at the expense of letting lots of runs in. He will likely struggle in this start against the hot bats of the Red Sox.

Red Sox vs. White Sox

The line is currently set at BOS -280 CWS +230 after opening at BOS -240 CWS +205. I have to go with the boring premise today of the better team taking this one. When it comes to the pitching matchup, I just trust Price on the mound so much more than Fulmer. It’s not to say the White Sox don’t have hitting, but the Red Sox do too and their pitching is better. The over/under has stayed consistent at 10. I’d take the over in this one, as both teams have been hitting the ball well lately.
