The Pick: 76ers 119, Cavaliers 117

We’ll try the Over based on head-to-head data along with the Cavaliers on opening nights.

Game Betting Analysis

The data is pointing to the Over here, along with the Cavaliers with a road upset – so let’s explore. While Cleveland has won four straight games against Philadelphia, along with seven of the last eight, we are dealing with a different Sixers team this year as shown in opening night against the Knicks. The underdog has, however, covered the spread in 10 of 11 meetings, so all signs are point to Cleveland but the Sixers’ makeover in the offseason worries us on these stats. We move to the total where the Over has hit in six of the last eight meetings, while Cleveland has also gone Over in five of six season opening games.

Deciding Factor: LeBron James and Jaylen Brown’s Philadelphia Home Debut vs. Cleveland’s Retooled Backcourt

Tonight is the home debut for LeBron James and Jaylen Brown in a 76ers uniform, and Philadelphia already has a data point worth watching closely: in Monday’s season-opening 106-100 road win over the defending-champion Knicks, Tyrese Maxey led the way with 28 points on 9-of-19 shooting, while Joel Embiid struggled to find his shot, going just 4-of-15 from the field (though he did grab 11 rebounds). James and Brown — both newcomers via this offseason’s moves (James signing from the Lakers, Brown arriving in a trade from Boston) — are getting their first game in front of the home crowd, giving Philadelphia a four-star perimeter group that should have more rhythm after a game of live action together. That matters directly tonight, because if Embiid’s cold shooting carries over, Philadelphia will need James, Brown and Maxey to carry a heavier offensive load than originally planned.

Cleveland, meanwhile, debuts its own new pairing: Donovan Mitchell and James Harden get their first full training camp and season together after Harden arrived via a February trade that sent Darius Garland to the Clippers. The fit already has a track record — Cleveland went 19-7 with Harden in the lineup down the stretch last season, and the two advanced through an 18-game playoff run together in which Harden averaged 19.2 points and 5.5 assists. Up front, Evan Mobley (18.2 points, 9.0 rebounds per game last season) and Jarrett Allen give Cleveland a frontcourt pairing that’s faced Embiid directly before, and both have said this offseason’s extra time together — after only joining forces midseason last year — should let that chemistry show up from game one rather than needing to be rebuilt. If Embiid’s shooting struggles continue against a frontcourt familiar with guarding him, Philadelphia’s three other stars will have to be nearly flawless in their home debut; but if Mitchell and Harden are still searching for their footing in new sets this early, Philadelphia’s sheer star power gives it the edge to open its home slate with a win.
