Best Bet: U154.5 (-110) at DraftKings

Score Prediction: Valkyries 78, Dream 76

The Pick: Valkyries 78, Dream 76

We’ll test the Under in Game 1, based on head-to-head data along with Golden State’s home data this season.

Game Betting Analysis

We’re going to camp out in the total market for this one, but let’s go through the ATS market and explain why. Atlanta is hot right now, winning and covering its last 10 games, enough to make anyone fade them feel foolish before hindsight. However, Golden State has won and covered its last three meetings with Atlanta, along with four of five. This will be the first time they meet where Golden State is the favorite, however, so be mindful of role reversals here. We move to the total with the messy moneyline and ATS market, where the Under has hit in four of five meetings. Golden State has also hit the Under in four of six home games. There’s a setback, though, as Atlanta is hitting Overs a lot lately, along with eight straight games on a Saturday. This is a tricky one anyone you look at it, but we’ll hold our breathe and try the Under – with neither team touching 80 points in four of five meetings, and the losing team in those four games scoring 75 points or less.

Deciding Factor: Golden State’s Historic Home Defense vs. Atlanta’s Allisha Gray Uncertainty

Golden State enters just its second season as a franchise with the No. 2 seed and the league’s best regular-season defensive rating, and that identity has carried into October — the Valkyries swept Las Vegas in the semifinals, with their only postseason blemish an overtime road loss to Dallas back in the first round. At home, where Game 1 tips off Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET, Golden State went 17-5 in the regular season and hasn’t lost yet in the playoffs, and the market reflects it: the Valkyries are -2.5 (-142 moneyline) favorites. They also went a perfect 3-0 against Atlanta in the regular season, though that head-to-head history is dated now, with the two teams not having met since early July. A defense this good, on its own floor, in a series opener, is the single biggest structural advantage either team brings into this matchup.

Atlanta, meanwhile, is the only unbeaten team left in these playoffs, having swept New York in the semifinals after finishing the regular season top-five in offensive, defensive, and net rating — and critically, the Dream posted the league’s best road net rating at 15-7 away, which matters immensely since this entire series opens in Golden State’s building. But all of that is shadowed by Allisha Gray’s hand: the four-time All-Star averaged 19.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists in the regular season and hasn’t played a full game since the injury first occurred, with her availability for Game 1 still genuinely up in the air less than 24 hours out. If Gray is cleared and plays anywhere close to her regular-season level, Atlanta’s top-five offense and league-best road form give the Dream a real path to steal Game 1 and flip home-court advantage; but if she’s held out or significantly limited, Golden State’s historically elite home defense should be more than capable of suffocating an Atlanta attack missing one of its top three scorers and seizing control of the series from the opening game.
