Later in the night, we turn our attention towards the Boston Bruins and Anaheim Ducks with a pair of forwards in a favorable position to score, creating a thriller high scoring affair. Cale Makar
Arguably the most dynamic defenseman in the league, Cale Makar has been able to consistently pressure the net from a distance while anchoring the Colorado Avalanche back line, generating 2.50 Shots on Goal per game.
In a matchup against Pittsburgh, the quality of Makar’s Shots on Goal will improve while weaving the puck through a defense who struggles to wall off shot attempts per the Penguins bottom ten mark in Expected Goals Against in All Situations. When left unprotected, Arturs Silovs has been unable to protect the Penguins net, averaging a Save Percentage of .885 in four starts.
In 5-on-4 Situations, Makar shifts to the same side of the ice as Nathan MacKinnon, giving him the ability to crash through the middle without fear of getting countered in transition, setting himself up with a high quality one timer in front of the crease.
David Pastrnak
Even when receiving minimal support from his linemates, David Pastrnak has been able to play at a high level, averaging 0.32 Expected Goals per game while comfortably leading the Boston Bruins in Shots on Goal.
Fortunately for Pastrnak, he will be able to continue to keep the Bruins competitive in a matchup against the Anaheim Ducks by taking advantage of a back line who resides in the bottom half of the board in Expected Goals Against From High Danger Shots. Especially with Lukas Dostal incapable of matching Pastrnak’s output while scrambling in the Ducks net, giving up nearly three Goals Against per game.
When in the Power Play, Pastrnak has shockingly been conservative in his efforts of pressuring the net, mustering up just 0.05 Expected Goals per penalty. With positive regression looming large over Pastrnak, the Bruins forward will be able to convert his shot attempts into Shots on Goal at a higher rate, increasing his chances of scoring.
Beckett Sennecke
On the other side of the ice, Beckett Sennecke is fresh off of a one score performance against the Calgary Flames, his fourth Goal of the season. While playing alongside Cutter Gauthier, Sennecke has been a steady source of production in the Ducks second line, generating 0.35 Expected Goals per game.
Heading into Friday night’s matchup against the Bruins, Sennecke will be able to continue to light the lamp by attacking a back line who struggles to defend the net while ranking below league average in Expected Goals Against in 5-on-5 Play. Even with Jeremy Swayman playing at a high level while averaging a Save Percentage of .930, the Ducks ability to ambush the net from multiple angles will keep the Bruins goalie constantly moving, creating larger gaps on the outside for Sennecke to exploit.
Speaking of Gauthier, Anaheim’s center is currently listed as day-to-day on the Ducks injury report while dealing with an upper body injury. If Gauthier is unable to play, Sennecke’s usage rate will tick up, leading to a higher total of Expected Goals while rifling off shot attempts for the full duration of the contest.
