After an interesting international break full of storylines, including the ongoing saga involving Manchester City and its financial fair play issues, the Premier League returns to action on Saturday. City leads the league thanks in large part to a disappointing Arsenal performance against Brighton. With that result, Arsenal is in second and Brighton, surprisingly, in third, with Brentford and Leeds rounding out the top five.
Best Bets
Arsenal, +110 to win by 1.5 goals vs. Leeds
What’s worse than a 3-0 shutout loss? A 3-0 shutout loss that happens right before a two-week international break, leaving the taste to linger for fans without a chance to get back to winning ways the following weekend. Look for Arsenal to return to Emirates Stadium on a mission, and even though Leeds has started the season unbeaten and relatively strong, their last two results came against Newcastle and Crystal Palace, with the latter being a scoreless draw. A 2-0 Arsenal win sounds like it’s not a stretch for a team that’s heavily favored and motivated to win.
Manchester United, -135 to win vs. Tottenham Hotspur
Manchester United might not be having the ideal season, but Tottenham Hotspur’s having a worse one. Look at these numbers through five matches: A pair of draws and three losses, only two goals scored, a goal differential of -6, and 20th in the Premier League. Though ManU is coming off a 1-1 draw at Fulham and a Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Brighton, Old Trafford is still a challenging place to play, and certainly not the ideal place for Spurs to fix what ails them.
Lewis Koumas, +310 anytime goalscorer for Liverpool vs. Manchester City
This could be the most watched match of the weekend, given these two teams’ massive fan bases and the recent headlines around City. It’s also, among all the other storylines, a matchup that should be featuring the Premier League’s top two goalscorers heading into this weekend’s slate of matches. Erling Haaland is averaging a goal a game, and Alexander Isak, with four goals in five, isn’t much farther behind. But both strikers have injury concerns coming out of the international break, as does Cody Gakpo, and Bradley Barcola is still adjusting to life in the Premier League. That makes Lewis Koumas an unlikely beneficiary of circumstance.
Hull City, +240 to draw Everton
Hull has been a surprising entry into the Premier League mix this season. Initially looking like they’d be an up and then down again team after squeaking in via the Championship playoff, the Tigers have only lost a single match in their first five and managed draws against Aston Villa and Chelsea. Everton’s no slouch, unbeaten in their first five, but their three draws include a scoreless slog to Spurs. Look for the league’s current 7th and 8th place teams to deadlock, giving further credence to Hull’s ability to stay up.
Given the bitterness of the loss to Brighton, Arsenal righting itself by being two goals to the good over Leeds appears a likelihood.
