Best Bet: IOWA +3 (-110) at DraftKings

Score Prediction: Washington 21, Iowa 19

The Pick: Washington 21, Iowa 19

We’ll take the Hawkeyes to cover based on Washington’s struggles along with Iowa in this situation, while the Under is an option with lower conviction.

Game Betting Analysis

There’s a few ways to go here based on the data, so let’s start with the ATS market where Washington has struggled this season. The Huskies have dropped the spread in four of five games this season, while Iowa has covered the spread in seven straight games when facing a non-AP ranked school as an underdog. As for the total, Iowa has hit the Under in four of five games this season while also hitting the Under in six straight games when facing an non-AP ranked school as the underdog. However, Husky Stadium is averaging 44.8 points per game this season, and the line given is 41.5 – so we’ll take the ATS market of the two.

Deciding Factor: Iowa’s Turnover-Forcing Defense vs. Washington’s Costly Giveaways

Iowa enters Friday at 3-1 off a 31-14 loss to No. 5 Ohio State, but that result says more about an offense knocked off schedule early than it does about the Hawkeyes’ defense, which has been one of the stingiest units in the country all season. Iowa has already posted two shutouts — 55-0 over Northern Iowa and 40-0 over Northern Illinois, the latter holding the Huskies to just 120 total yards and a mere 7 rushing yards — while also forcing multiple turnovers along the way. Even against Ohio State, the defense held up; it was quarterback Hank Brown fumbling on Iowa’s second offensive snap that put the Hawkeyes in an early hole they never fully climbed out of. A defense built around takeaways and suffocating overmatched offenses is now walking into a matchup against a team that has made exactly the kind of mistakes Iowa has spent all season punishing.

Washington, meanwhile, is reeling, having dropped back-to-back Big Ten games — 24-27 to Minnesota and 25-21 to USC — to fall to 0-2 in conference play, and the most recent loss turned directly on a Demond Williams Jr. fumble that USC returned 48 yards for a go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter. Across his four tracked starts, Williams already carries three interceptions to go with that fumble-six, and Washington lost the time-of-possession battle to USC by nearly ten minutes while managing zero fourth-quarter points in a game they led for most of the way. If Iowa’s defense gets anywhere near the live-ball opportunities it has feasted on against lesser competition, Washington’s turnover issue becomes the whole ballgame, and the Hawkeyes have a clear path to pushing their record to 4-1 heading into their bye while Washington slides to a third straight loss.
