The Pick: Panthers 27, Lions 24

We’ll take the Over and the Panthers to cover, based on Detroit trends along with secondary issues against an impressive passing attack.

Game Betting Analysis

The data points to the Over, so we’ll focus there with Detroit hitting the Over in eight of 10 games. The starting safeties are also out for Detroit, which we’ll explain in detail below, but with the Panthers’ passing attack paired with that knowledge we will assume points in this game. Carolina saw 96 total points in their only other home game this season. Along with the passing attack that Carolina might exploit, the Panthers have won six straight home games against the Lions while Detroit has dropped the spread in seven straight games when coming off a win. The home team has also covered the spread in the last four meetings, so Carolina covering seems to suffice as well.

Deciding Factor: Bryce Young’s Big-Play Attack vs. Detroit’s Shorthanded Secondary

Detroit’s defense tells two very different stories depending on which number you look at: the Lions rank 7th in the league allowing just 267.3 passing yards per game, yet sit 32nd in points allowed at a brutal 31.7 per contest. The gap between those two numbers is about to get tested in the worst possible spot. Both starting safeties are out — Kerby Joseph is missing his fourth straight game with a knee injury on no clear return timeline, and Brian Branch (an NFC Defensive Player of the Week earlier this season) remains out as well, with head coach Dan Campbell saying this week, “I don’t see it for either one.” That’s Detroit’s entire starting safety room gone against a Carolina offense that’s never been more dangerous through the air.

Bryce Young is in the middle of a legitimate breakout: a 113.3 passer rating, six touchdowns against just one interception, 8.9 yards per attempt, and he currently leads the NFL in completions of 20+ air yards. Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker have been making contested, tight-window catches look routine, and a Lions secondary now relying on a practice-squad elevation at safety is exactly the kind of shorthanded unit built to get exposed deep. Detroit is favored (-3.5) and still has the better record at 2-1 to Carolina’s 1-2, but with the total sitting at 50.5 and the Lions already 0-2-1 against the spread this season, the safety injuries are the single biggest variable standing between Detroit and a victory on Sunday night.
