Best Bet: O64.5 (-110) at FanDuel

Best Bet: USA -2.5 (-125)

Score Prediction: South Alabama 35, Marshall 32

The Pick: South Alabama 35, Marshall 32

We’ll try the Jaguars’ spread and the Over, with low conviction for each but based on 2026 data.

Game Betting Analysis

This is a tough one to nail down, as the Over seems like a great played based on the data. Why? Well, the Over has hit in seven of eight games for South Alabama. The Jaguars enter this game with a 5-1 O/U mark on the season, seeing one team score 41 points or more in four straight games and 39 points or more in five of six games. Also, South Alabama has seen the other school score at least 24 points in five straight games. 41 with 24 equals 65. 39 with 24 equals 63. So we go Over? Well, the line we’re getting is an insanely high 64.5. We’ll take the Jags’ spread, entering with a solid 4-2 ATS mark while also playing against Marshall’s terrible 1-5 ATS record this season. Our setback, though, is that South Alabama has seen the home team win seven of eight games, while Marshall has seen the underdog cover seven straight at home. With the crossing data points, it’s probably smart to take both markets here, as Marshall will need to game total to go Over if it wishes to keep pace with South Alabama.

Deciding Factor: South Alabama’s Fast-Start, Turnover-Forcing Formula vs. Marshall’s Self-Inflicted Giveaways

South Alabama brings the Sun Belt’s most explosive and most efficient offense into Huntington, scoring 38.8 points per game (25th nationally) behind an offensive line that’s the only Sun Belt unit on the Joe Moore Midseason Honor Roll and a three-headed backfield of Keenan Phillips, Trae’von Dunbar and PJ Martin that’s combined for 1,146 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. Phillips alone has flashed a ceiling few Sun Belt players can match, piling up 264 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns against Arkansas State, including a 100-yard kick return. The Jags have scored on their opening possession in five of six games and converted 23 of 26 red-zone trips, and while the defense is far from airtight at 34.5 points allowed per game (120th nationally), it’s opportunistic, already forcing 11 turnovers behind safety Cole Blaylock (42 tackles) and lineman Masey Lewis (fumble recovery, interception and a forced fumble). Against a Marshall team that just coughed the ball up six times in a single game, that turnover-hunting defense paired with the league’s most explosive, most efficient red-zone attack gives South Alabama a direct path to control this one even on the road.

Marshall, meanwhile, has shown it can move the football physically, it out-gained Coastal Carolina 505 total yards to 308 just last week, with quarterback Zion Turner going 18 of 27 for 219 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, and running back Judah Price breaking out for his first 100-yard rushing game of the season. The problem is what happens when the Herd has the ball in dangerous spots: four first-half turnovers in that same game staked Coastal Carolina to a 27-0 lead before a furious, ultimately unsuccessful rally, a pattern that fits a defense already ranked 118th nationally in points allowed (33.7 per game) and an offense that ranks 118th in scoring (22.0 per game) despite the underlying yardage. If Marshall can protect the football against a South Alabama defense built specifically around forcing those exact mistakes, the Herd has the tape to suggest it can hang; if the turnover bug resurfaces, this could get away from them quickly against the Sun Belt’s highest-scoring team.
