The Pick: Celtics 112, Pistons 110
We’ll take the Under based on Boston’s road opening data along with the head-to-head statistics.
Game Betting Analysis
The Under seems to be where the data is heading here, so let’s explore. The Under has hit in three straight meetings between these clubs, also hitting in five of the last six head-to-heads. Boston has also seen the Under hit in its last four road opening games, also recording an NBA-high 57 Unders in the 2025 season. There’s more conviction in the total data than the ATS as well. The Pistons have won four of five meetings, with the underdog covering four of five as well – both pointing to Detroit on Tuesday. However, the Pistons have dropped five of six season opening games while failing to cover four of five dating back to last year’s playoffs.

Deciding Factor: Jayson Tatum’s Clean Bill of Health vs. Cade Cunningham’s Continuity-Built Pistons
Boston opens the season with two things it didn’t have for nearly all of last year: a healthy Jayson Tatum and a proven second shot-creator alongside him. Tatum missed the first 62 games of 2025-26 recovering from his torn right Achilles, didn’t return until March 6, and was even held out of Boston’s Game 7 collapse against Philadelphia in the first round. Now nearly 17 months removed from the injury, he says he’s “back healthy,” wants to play both nights of back-to-backs for the first time since the surgery, and looked every bit of it in the preseason, averaging 21.0 points as Boston went 4-0 and led the league at 126.0 points per game. The bigger swing factor is Paul George, acquired in the July trade that sent Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia. George is far from a sure thing at 36 and has missed nearly 40 percent of his games since 2019-20, including the first 12 games last season after knee surgery, but he’s carrying no injury designation into Tuesday and posted 17.3 points per game last season with Philadelphia, upping that to 17.4 points on 55 percent three-point shooting against Boston itself in last year’s playoff series. If both stars suit up and the preseason burst carries over, the Celtics field their most dangerous perimeter pairing since Brown and Tatum shared the floor healthy.
Detroit, meanwhile, isn’t counting on health-related swings, it’s counting on continuity. The Pistons bring back virtually the entire core from a team that went 60-22, claimed the East’s No. 1 seed outright, and beat Boston three times in four meetings a year ago, built around an MVP-caliber age-24 season from Cade Cunningham that carried Detroit to a seven-game conference semifinal battle with Cleveland. Cunningham’s scary collapsed-lung scare in those playoffs is in the rearview, he carries no injury designation for the opener, and the roster around him only got deeper, with Jalen Duren anchoring the paint, Ausar Thompson providing two-way versatility, and offseason adds Isaiah Joe, John Collins, and Taurean Prince layered on as complementary pieces rather than replacements. Detroit went 3-1 in the preseason behind that same identity. If Cunningham’s conditioning holds up over 48 minutes against a Boston team still working in new pieces live for the first time, the defending East No. 1 seed has every reason to believe it can set the tone again in Little Caesars Arena.
