2026 World Cup Top Goalscorer Picks, Predictions, Odds & Analysis
With a record number of teams at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and an additional round of matches, it’s almost certain that we’re going to have a record number of goals in the tournament.
And it’s even possible that the all-time record for goals scored by a single player in a World Cup tournament falls this year. In 1958, Just Fontaine of France scored a remarkable 13 goals in just six matches to beat the record set by Hungary’s Sándor Kocsis just four years prior, with 11.
You’d think that the Golden Boot winner hails from the winning team more often that not, but that’s actually not the case. Last time out, Kylian Mbappé got the trophy with eight goals, including a hat trick in the final, but wasn’t able to pair it with the ultimate trophy, as Argentina bested France in PKs to give Lionel Messi his first World Cup win.
In 2018, it was England’s Harry Kane winning with six goals, and four years prior to that, Colombia’s James Rodriguez surprised Golden Boot forecasters with his six-goal outing.
Oddly, though, the last four Silver Boot winners — naturally, for second place in the goalscoring race — all hailed from the winning teams, including Lionel Messi in 2022, Antoine Griezmann in 2018, Thomas Müller in 2014, and David Villa in 2010.
Here’s a look at this year’s candidates to take home the prize.
2026 World Cup Top Goalscorer Odds
The field includes some candidates that might surprise you — either because they hail from teams that might not go that deep into the competition, or who stand to miss initial matches recovering from injury. But there are also some candidates in there you’d expect.
2026 World Cup Top Goalscorer Picks & Predictions
Unlike some past tournaments, this year’s World Cup doesn’t have one clear favorite, which makes predicting the top goalscorer an exercise in predicting how far teams will go and how each team’s goalscoring distribution will shake out. But then there’s also Erling Haaland in the mix, who might only be able to will his team to the quarterfinals, but also might bring the same energy that he brought when he first announced himself to the world by scoring nine goals in a U-20 World Cup match in 2019.
Kylian Mbappé, France
Current Best Odds:
The French forward’s future with Real Madrid has hit an unusual inflection point — with nearly 70 million signing an online petition demanding he be moved from the club (though that could be bot-inflated, but it does make for headline-grabbing lore). But he’s still the top striker in an immensely talented squad that is tapped to make the final if not win it outright. He’s the reigning Golden Boot winner and though no one’s ever won it two consecutive tournaments, he could be the first.
Harry Kane, England
Current Best Odds:
2018’s Golden Boot winner is now 32, and while he’s likely got one more World Cup in him after this one, this could be his last one where he’s the primary striker in a loaded lineup. The England squad also has a solid supporting cast of chance creators that could help Kane take them deep in the tournament.
Erling Haaland, Norway
Current Best Odds:
The question here is how far Norway will go — getting past the quarterfinals seems like a tall order. But then the math becomes will Haaland be able to score more goals in six matches than the finalists’ best scorers can in eight. Given his pending Premier League Golden Boot with City this season, approaching the 30-goal mark, and his consistent track record, he’s got a good shot at racking up stats.
Lionel Messi, Argentina
Current Best Odds:
Were the count to have been stopped in the 79th minute of the 2022 final, Messi would have had a Golden Boot and a much easier time securing a World Cup trophy than he actually did. But he had to settle for a Silver Boot and an elusive trophy that was the last puzzle piece for many in giving him GOAT status.
He’ll be the centerpiece of an aging but still potent Albiceleste side, and as he’s showing in MLS, he’s still capable of carving up defenses and finding ridiculously small slivers of space to charge through, meeting hopeful crosses only he seems to latch onto, and scoring.
Lamine Yamal, Spain
Current Best Odds:
In picking Lamine Yamal to win the Golden Boot, you have to do two things: First, believe that Spain will go far in the tournament, and two, believe that the 18-year-old wunderkind will heal from a hamstring injury in time to get at least two group stage games in — as current projections have him missing the opener. That’s still time to rack up goals against Saudi Arabia before a sterner test in Uruguay, but it means missing out on the goalfest that a match against Cape Verde could be.
Best Bet: Kylian Mbappe, France
2026 World Cup Team Top Goalscorer Odds
Though only a handful of scorers stand a good chance to win the Golden Boot, the lines on team top goalscorers provide a chance for fans of certain teams to take their knowledge and apply it to this unusual but interesting proposition.
2026 World Cup Mexico Top Goalscorer Odds
In considering the top three strikers — Fulham’s Raúl Jiménez, AC Milan’s Santi Giménez, and Inter Miami’s Germán Berterame — Jiménez is the favorite for a reason, being arguably the most in form of the three. Giménez failed to score in Serie A this season, while Berterame has had a bumpier-than-expected transition into MLS. Meanwhile, Jiménez has 20% of Fulham’s goals this season and should get the lion’s share of El Tri’s scoring opportunities.
Best Bet: Raúl Jiménez (+250)
2026 World Cup Canada Top Goalscorer Odds
Though Jonathan David and Cyle Larin are expected to get the bulk of the minutes up top for Les Rouges, David’s had the better and more stable club season, getting six goals for Juventus playing alongside Concacaf rivals Weston McKennie and Timothy Weah. Larin, meanwhile, got loaned to Feyenoord from Mallorca for half a season and then was moved to Southampton. Alphonso Davies, assuming he’s healthy for the group stages, is another consideration as he has a history of taking PKs for the club, though he didn’t convert the one that could have changed their trajectory in the 2022 World Cup.
Best Bet: Jonathan David (+200)
2026 World Cup USA Top Goalscorer Odds
Will it be Captain America or Balo? Years before the U.S. was slated to host this World Cup, American soccer fans were hinging their hopes of Christian Pulisic developing into a world class talent. He’s done so, now in his third season with AC Milan, though this current season hasn’t been an ideal lead-in to the World Cup. More recently, Folarin Balogun — born in the U.S. but raised in England — has become a national team standout and a featured forward for Monaco. Pulisic has a knack for scoring when it matters for the U.S., including in the final group stage match in 2022 against Iran that sent his team to the knockout rounds, but Balogun’s currently in better form.
Best Bet: Folarin Balogun (+275)
2026 World Cup Brazil Top Goalscorer Odds
Neymar is back in the mix for Brazil after returning to Santos, Matheus Cunha has had a solid season for Manchester United, and Raphinha has been a standout at Barcelona. But rounding into his prime at 25, Vinicius Jr has emerged as the most talismanic Brazilian player in today’s game, and though he’s decidedly the favorite, there’s good reason he’s that.
Best Bet: Vinicius Jr (+250)
2026 World Cup Spain Top Goalscorer Odds
While there’s been a lot of focus going into the tournament on Yamine Lamal — and rightfully so, given his talent — he’s also coming into the tournament with a hamstring injury that will sideline him for at least the first match and possibly more. He’ll have time to make that up assuming he’s out for only the one match, but that is a match against Cape Verde, which could be one of the more lopsided matches of the entire World Cup.
Enter Mikel Oyarzabal. He’s coming off a 15-goal season in La Liga for Real Sociedad and he’s sure to be the target of myriad pinpoint passes from one of the deepest midfields in world soccer.
Best Bet: Mikel Oyarzabal (+175)
2026 World Cup Germany Top Goalscorer Odds
Germany’s one of the more intriguing dark horse picks for a World Cup win, and much of that has to do with the significant talent they’ve amassed. Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz are two of the best attacking midfielders in the tournament, and a lot of what Die Mannschaft does will run through them.
Nick Woltemade should get his share of goals after coming off his campaign with Newcastle. But consider that Arsenal’s long-pined-for Premier League title was made possible though Kai Havertz’s lone goal in the Gunners’ penultimate match that allowed them to clinch once City slipped in its penultimate match, and there’s really only one choice that makes narrative sense.
Best Bet: Kai Havertz (+300)
2026 World Cup Argentina Top Goalscorer Odds
When it comes to anything involving Argentina, many automatically gravitate to Lionel Messi and leave it at that. (Oddsmakers certainly have.) It’s quite possible, though, that Messi — favored as one of the top goalscorers in the whole tournament — shifts into more of a facilitator than a scorer role, given just how much defenses will key on him. In that case, look for either Lautaro Martinez or Julian Alvarez to be the prime beneficiary of Messi assists.
But also, don’t be surprised if Messi just takes the goalscoring on himself.
Best Bet(s): Julian Alvarez (+400), Lionel Messi (+150)
2026 World Cup France Top Goalscorer Odds
Having picked Kylian Mbappé to be the best bet to win the Golden Boot, that’s the safe albeit less potentially lucrative pick here despite an expensive -160. Do consider Ousmane Dembélé, the reigning Ballon d’Or who’s brought PSG to a return trip to the Champions League final, should Mbappé not have the dominant tournament everyone’s expecting.
Best Bet(s): Pass, Ousmane Dembele (+600)
2026 World Cup Portugal Top Goalscorer Odds
The temptation here is to pick Cristiano Ronaldo, who is playing what has to be his last World Cup at 41. But unless there are a lot of PKs and set pieces in Portugal’s World Cup journey, Gonçalo Ramos — coming off two solid seasons with PSG — could actually surprise those who don’t know much more about the squad beyond its most famous export.
Best Bet: Gonçalo Ramos (+400)
2026 World Cup England Top Goalscorer Odds
Harry Kane is far and away the favorite for the Three Lions at -230. Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham are intriguing longshots here, but they’re both more likely to set up Kane for goals than score themselves. This one’s not particularly exciting if you’re looking for longer odds, but also, it’s England — there’s no need to overthink who’s scoring in the effort to get it to “come home.”
Best Bet: Pass
2026 World Cup Netherlands Top Goalscorer Odds
Of the three that are most capable of topping Oranje’s goalscorer list, Cody Gakpo has come up big in international tournaments and gets the edge over both Donyell Malen, who is arguably the most in-form of the three, or Memphis Depay, struggling in Brazil but still a focal point of Netherland’s offense,
Best Bet: Cody Gakpo (+300)
2026 World Cup Scotland Top Goalscorer Odds
Scott McTominay is arguably the best player Scotland’s putting out there, but as a striker with 20 goals in all competitions, leading Hearts to within touching distance of a title before Celtic did the inevitable on the final day of the season, consider Lawrence Shankland.
Best Bet: Lawrence Shankland (+550)
2026 World Cup Player of the Tournament Odds, Picks & Predictions
There’s not a clear-cut favorite in this year’s World Cup, and the Player of the Tournament field reflects that. Before the hamstring injury he suffered, Lamine Yamal had a good chance to turn heads were Spain to go far in the tournament. If you believe in England, it’s likely going to have to do with Harry Kane, though Bukayo Saka’s name is among the second tier of candidates.
But if you believe in one of the 2022 finalists, it’s likely to come down to Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi. Despite the continuing inevitability of Messi, France is formidable, and barring injury or defenses collapsing on him, Mbappé will be central to Les Blues’ success.
Best Bet: Kylian Mbappé (+900)
