With clear disadvantages on both sides of the ice, the Philadelphia Flyers were simply outmatched in their first game against Carolina, losing to the Hurricanes 0-3. Their lack of production on offense made it near impossible for them to stretch out their coverage, resulting in just 1.39 Expected Goals to Carolina’s 2.87.

To make matters worse for Philadelphia, Owen Tippett’s status is still up in the air as he is currently dealing with an undisclosed injury. Should Tippett continue to sit out, then they will be too overly reliant on Porter Martone to keep them competitive, making it easier for the Hurricanes to shade their coverage towards their young forward.

While the Carolina Hurricanes front line hogged the spotlight, their back line has been quietly just as productive, ranking in the top-5 in Expected Goals Against in All Situations. Their high level of play on both sides of the ice helped drastically reduce the amount of variance in their contests, increasing their chances of winning at a high rate.

With Frederik Andersen surrounded by a back line who thrived in coverage, the Hurricanes goalie was able to string together his performances throughout the playoffs, averaging just 0.90 Goals Against per game and a .961 Save Percentage. With the Hurricanes capable of shading their coverage towards Martone without sacrificing too much space in front of the crease for his underwhelming linemates to exploit, expect the Flyers to struggle to pressure the net and be held under their team total.
