Senegal 2026 World Cup Team Preview, Betting Odds, Predictions & Best Bets

Senegal is set to participate in its third consecutive World Cup, having ended a 16-year absence before this recent run.

The Pape Thiaw-led squad enters the 2026 World Cup as arguably the strongest African side of the tournament. Les Lions de la Teranga will attempt to advance from Group I, which many consider the tournament’s “Group of Death.”

Senegal holds the second-shortest odds among African nations to lift the trophy at MetLife Stadium. Les Lions de la Teranga enter at +10000 to win the tournament, with only Morocco among African nations shorter at +6000.

Oddsmakers have Senegal reaching the final, in what would be its longest run in the tournament, at +3000.

Senegal 2026 World Cup Best Bet

Due to Group I’s difficulty, Senegal may struggle to qualify for the knockout rounds without the new tiebreaker format. With the expanded World Cup format, the eight best third-placed teams across all groups can advance to the Round of 32.

France will more than likely occupy one of the top two spots in the group, as the current favorite to win the 2026 World Cup. That leaves one guaranteed playoff-round spot, which many expect to go to Norway.

Senegal’s margin for error will be extremely small, if not nonexistent, due to the difficulty of its group. Relying on the new tiebreaker system will be risky, and it would not surprise me to see Les Lions de la Teranga go out early as a result.

While Senegal is definitely a top team in the tournament, unfortunate circumstances make “Senegal Not to Qualify from Group Stage” a great value at +200.

Best Bet: Senegal to Qualify from Group Stage: No (+200)

Senegal 2026 World Cup Players to Watch

Thiaw’s squad consists of some of the premier talents in Europe’s Top 5 leagues. While older stars have already made a name for themselves, here are some younger players to watch at this year’s tournament:

Nicolas Jackson: Bayern Munich striker Jackson is set to attend his second World Cup, having debuted in the tournament in 2022. The then 20-year-old played just 17 minutes across Senegal’s four matches.

Jackson now has a much larger role in Les Lions de la Teranga and will likely start most games up top for Thiaw. Jackson’s profile is unique for a striker, combining elite athleticism with strong link-up play at the top of the pitch.

Senegal will count on Jackson to contribute to its attack in the difficult Group I.

Ibrahim Mbaye: PSG wonderkid Mbaye is set to make his World Cup squad at just 18-years-old. Unfortunately for the teenager, he will likely come off the bench as he plays in the same position as national team legend Sadio Mane.

However, if and when Thiaw gives the young winger playing time, Mbaye will have an opportunity to put the world on notice for those those unfamiliar with the young winger.

Mbaye is developing alongside some of the world’s best attackers at PSG and will surely be a threat for Senegal now and in the near future.

Senegal World Cup History

Senegal saw some success at the 2022 World Cup, reaching the knockout rounds for the first time since 2002. However, this success was short-lived, as a disappointing performance against England led to Les Lions de la Teranga’s elimination in the Round of 16.

The 3-0 loss marked the final game of Aliou Cisse’s tenure as manager of Senegal. Thiaw was appointed shortly after and has had decent success in African tournaments since the 2022 World Cup.
