The first year of the post-Tom Herman era at Houston did not go well based on the recent standard set by the Cougars. Houston slumped to 7-6 last season after residing near the top of the polls for the previous two years. The record was much worse than it looked as the Cougars were a combined 16 points short of an 11-2 record.

D’Eriq King now has a full season as quarterback to work his magic. His ascension to the job late last season sparked a struggling Cougars offense and gives hope for the coming season. However, King is missing some of his weapons as running back Duke Catalon left the team and his two top wide receivers graduated. In fact, 77 percent of the team’s total targets from last year were lost for one reason or another. Houston also has a new offensive playcaller as Kendal Briles takes over as offensive coordinator. Briles was a part of the Baylor staff when the team set a new offensive standard.

For Houston’s defense, last season was a tale of two halves. In the second half of the season, Houston’s defense dropped off substantially, especially in defending against the pass. However, the secondary has one more year of experience this year and largely returns from last year. In addition, the secondary should be bolstered by the addition of Ole Miss transfer Deontay Anderson who was previously a top recruit. Provided that the issues on the offensive side of the ball are worked out, the defense is strong enough to help return Houston to prominence.

Houston has a favorable schedule this season as many of its difficult conference games are at home this season. In addition, the Cougars have a home matchup against Arizona the second week of the season. Provided that the Cougars learn to pull out close games at the end, seven wins should be a floor.
