Going back to the early 2000s, Jake Westbrook was a featured starter for Cleveland. His right elbow gave him trouble. He missed most of the 2001 season with elbow problems, and never really recovered to be the pitcher he was expected to be. A few years later they had guys like Ryan Ludwick and Brian Tallet go under the knife with major injuries. Aaron Boone missed part of the 2004 season with Cleveland, which was after his New York Heroics. He suffered a knee injury, missing over half of the season.

Grady Sizemore was a talented outfielder and his injuries ultimately derailed his career. In 2010 the injuries started to occur more frequently. Sizemore had surgery on his left elbow and abdomen in 2009, but it was towards the end of the season. Heading into 2010, he had a knee injury that caused him to miss the season. Carlos Santana was one to follow a year later, having surgery on his knee. Michael Brantley has battled health issues, and it is troubling because he is a talented bat needed in the Cleveland lineup. Brantley had wrist problems in 2011, missing the second half of the season.

It was a tough start to the career for Lonnie Chisenhall, who fractured his forearm back in 2012. During the 2015 season, Gavin Floyd and Josh Tomlin both went down at the beginning of season for surgery. Losing two starters was a tough ask for the Guardians to recover, especially with Carlos Carrasco also dealing with shoulder issues. Over the last few seasons, Brantley continued to deal with shoulder fatigue, and eventually missed a good portion of the season. Carlos Carrasco and Danny Salazar have both made trips to the 60-day DL.

Last season was a rough one for Salazar, especially after putting together a few strong series of outings. He ended up with rotator cuff tendinitis, and was out for the season in early May. Andrew Miller started to deal with more nagging injuries that never quite fully healed for the Guardians, and that might a sign of Miller’s age and could be recurring.
