Best Bet: U55 (-113) at BetRivers

Score Prediction: Texas Tech 28, Arizona 26

The Pick: Texas Tech 28, Arizona 26

We’ll take the Under based on multiple data points for both schools.

Game Betting Analysis

This is a tricky one, so let’s go through the data points. We’ll go with the Under, which doesn’t appease on the surface as we see Texas Tech is 3-1 O/U at home this season and 5-2 O/U overall. However, the Under has hit in two straight meetings – but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Texas Tech has hit the Under four of its last five games when facing an AP ranked school. Arizona has also hit the Under in seven of eight conference games. We’re not done. Arizona has hit the Under in four of six games as the underdog, while also going Under in a remarkable 10 of 14 games when coming off a win. So despite the Texas Tech home data and Arizona’s scoring spree lately, we succumb to the Under.

Deciding Factor: Noah Fifita’s Clean Pocket Play vs. Texas Tech’s Turnover Problem

Arizona arrives riding a five-game winning streak that’s been built on quarterback efficiency as much as talent, and Noah Fifita is the engine behind it: 2,064 yards, 18 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions through seven games, a rate that’s let the Wildcats win by scores as varied as 39-3 over Iowa State, 52-31 at West Virginia and 42-17 over Northern Illinois without needing to lean on one style of game. Fifita has two legitimate weapons to spread the ball to in Isaiah Mizell (27 catches, 493 yards, 5 touchdowns) and Kedrick Reescano (80 carries, 303 yards, 5 touchdowns), giving Arizona balance that’s made its offense hard to key on. That efficiency matters directly against a Texas Tech defense anchored by A.J. Holmes Jr., whose 6.5 sacks lead the Red Raiders and represent the clearest threat to disrupting a clean pocket; if Fifita continues protecting the ball at the rate he has all season, Arizona’s offense gives it a real chance to go into Lubbock and hand a ranked Big 12 team its second loss of the year.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders, meanwhile, have the opposite problem under center. Will Hammond has thrown 6 interceptions on nearly 500 fewer passing yards than Fifita, and the turnover issues came to a head in Texas Tech’s only loss of the season, a 37-24 defeat at Cincinnati in which Hammond threw a pick, lost a fumble and was flagged for intentional grounding, while the team committed a season-high 12 penalties for 75 yards and turned the ball over three times in plays that led directly to Cincinnati points — mistakes head coach Joey McGuire said afterward decided the game. Texas Tech does have its own answers, with J’Koby Williams (86 carries, 619 yards, 5 touchdowns) and Kenny Johnson (31 catches, 499 yards) giving Hammond a run-first floor to lean on, and Arizona will be without starting cornerback Jay’Vion Cole, who’s officially out, with receivers Chris Hunter and Giovanni Richardson both questionable after injuries against Cincinnati earlier this month. If Hammond can avoid the self-inflicted mistakes that sank Texas Tech in its lone loss and let Williams control the tempo on the ground, the Red Raiders have a clear path to protecting their home unbeaten record and ending Arizona’s win streak.
