Best Bet: GASO -3.5 (-109) at bet365

Score Prediction: Georgia Southern 26, Old Dominion 21

The Pick: Georgia Southern 26, Old Dominion 21

We’ll take the Georgia Southern spread based on 2026 data for both clubs, but conviction is low based on head-to-head trends.

Game Betting Analysis

The ATS is going to be tricky here. Looking at 2026 records, it seems pretty straightforward with Georgia Southern 5-1 on the ATS this season and covering seven of its last eight games dating back to last season. Old Dominion, on the other hand, enters with a 1-5 ATS mark. However, Old Dominion has dominated this head-to-head series with wins in the outright and ATS markets the last three meetings. The total is also murky, the Under hitting in three of four meetings but Old Dominion hitting the Over in six straight games when playing in Virginia as the underdog. Old Dominion has scored exactly 10 points in each game over the last two week, failing to go over 17 points in three of four games. We’ll side with the 2026 data for each team and ODU’s offensive woes.

Deciding Factor: Max Johnson’s Passing Volume vs. Old Dominion’s Run-First, Shutdown Formula

Georgia Southern heads into Thursday night’s trip to Norfolk at 2-4, but it’s still a 3.5-point road favorite (-154 on the moneyline) off the back of one of the more balanced attacks in the Sun Belt. The Eagles are averaging 395.8 total yards per game, with 275.83 of those coming through the air behind quarterback Max Johnson, who has thrown for 1,572 yards on the season, while running back David Mbadinga has added 233 net rushing yards of his own. That volume showed up even in defeat last week, when Georgia Southern dropped a tight 24-27 decision at home to James Madison rather than getting blown out, a sign the offense can move the ball against quality competition even when the results haven’t gone its way. Against an Old Dominion defense that’s had to lean on bend-don’t-break tactics all year, Georgia Southern’s ability to stretch the field and sustain drives through the air gives it the clearest path to covering the number on the road.

Old Dominion, meanwhile, is coming off a 10-3 win at Appalachian State that snapped a four-game losing streak, but it did so with a formula that’s hard to repeat against a team built to throw the ball: quarterback Quinn Henicle, who missed time earlier this season with an undisclosed injury that forced Ryan Huff into a start against James Madison, threw for just 97 yards in that win, while running back Devin Roche did the heavy lifting with 101 yards on the ground. The Monarchs’ offense ranks 133rd nationally in points per possession at 1.43, and while their defense has been the modest strength of the operation — ranking 73rd nationally in opponent scoring efficiency at 2.17 points per possession allowed — that number was built largely against teams that couldn’t move the ball through the air the way Georgia Southern can. If Henicle is still limited and Georgia Southern’s defense can bottle up Roche early, forcing Old Dominion into obvious passing downs it hasn’t shown it can handle, the Eagles should be able to pull away late; but if the Monarchs can replicate the App State blueprint — control the clock with Roche, lean on their defense, and keep this a low-scoring grind at home — they have a real path to covering the 3.5 and springing the upset in front of their own crowd.
