Best Bet: U47.5 (-111) at bet365

Score Prediction: ECU 27, UAB 20

The Pick: ECU 27, UAB 20

We’ll take the Under based on both team’s 2026 stats and UAB home data.

Game Betting Analysis

The data overwhelmingly points to the Under, so we’ll focus our energy there with UAB seeing all three home games this season go Under the total. The Blazers enter with a 1-5 O/U record this season while ECU also favors the Under heavily, entering with a 1-4 O/U record this season while the Pirates have also hit the Under in six straight games when facing a non-AP ranked school. Our setback is the head-to-head data, hitting in the last two meetings despite UAB only scoring 14 points in 2013. ECU has covered the spread in those two meetings, while UAB has also dropped the spread in eight of nine games when facing non-AP ranked schools in October.

Deciding Factor: East Carolina’s Top-15 Defense vs. Ryder Burton’s Turnover Problem

East Carolina heads into Thursday’s short-week trip to Birmingham off a 28-12 win over Rice, sitting at 3-2 and favored by 4.5 points (-192 on the moneyline) against a UAB team it’s never lost to at Protective Stadium in recent history. The Pirates’ case starts with a defense that’s quietly become one of the better units in the Group of Five, ranking 12th nationally in success rate and 14th in EPA/Play, while holding opponents to just 22.6 points per game and ranking 25th against the pass. That unit lines up Thursday against a UAB offense that ranks 108th nationally and 129th in the country through the air, and it’s paired with a surging ground game of its own: sophomore back T.J. Engleman Jr. has rushed for 99, 129 and 136 yards in his last three outings and is averaging 8.3 yards per carry on the season (45 carries, 386 yards, three touchdowns) since taking the job over from Ashton Gray and Michael Allen. If Engleman keeps finding the same room on the ground and East Carolina’s defense does what it’s done all season, the Pirates should be able to control this one from both sides of the ball on the road.

UAB, meanwhile, is coming off a 38-13 blowout loss to Memphis in which quarterback Ryder Burton went just 10-of-20 for 131 yards with another interception, pushing his season line to four touchdowns against five picks on a shaky 55.4% completion rate. The bigger issue for the Blazers is on the other side of the ball — their run defense ranks 123rd nationally, their overall defensive success rate sits at 103rd, and they’ve allowed points on every single red-zone trip they’ve faced all season, which is a dangerous combination against a team now leaning on Engleman to move the chains. UAB does have one thing working in its favor: East Carolina’s own offense has been inefficient in its own right, converting just 27% of third downs (132nd in the FBS) and racking up 70.6 penalty yards per game (116th nationally), so this isn’t a case of one unstoppable attack against a sieve. If Burton can protect the football better than he has the last two weeks and UAB’s defense can get a couple of stops on third down to get East Carolina’s offense off schedule, the Blazers have a real path to keeping this close at home and springing the upset as home underdogs.
