Game Betting Analysis
There is some concern in this game, so let’s go through the data carefully – starting with the pick, which is FIU. The home team has won outright and covered the spread in the last two meetings, both being favorites. New Mexico State has also seen the favorite cover the spread in its last four games. So all signs point to FIU, but this line opened at -3.5 and is now -6.5, that’s a large leap. The total is also tricky, the Over hitting in two straight meetings along with six of seven conference road games for the Aggies. However, FIU presents one of the best defenses in the country with a 1-3 O/U record this season and just 38 points per game averaged through two home games this season. In five games this season, New Mexico State has failed to touch 20 points in three of them, two of those three on the road. We’ll lean Under on the total with no real conviction in either market. Pick your poison.

Deciding Factor: James Jones’ Ground Game vs. FIU’s Nation’s-Best Run Defense
New Mexico State (2-3, 1-0 C-USA) leans on one engine almost entirely, and it’s running into the toughest run defense it has seen all season. Running back James Jones set a career high with 155 yards on the ground in last Thursday’s 34-13 win over Western Kentucky, giving him 510 yards through five games (102.0 per contest, first in Conference USA) and CUSA Offensive Player of the Week honors. The Aggies’ passing attack has been unspectacular by comparison, which means Jones isn’t just the best player on the field for New Mexico State — he’s effectively the entire offensive plan heading into Miami.
That plan runs straight into a buzzsaw. FIU (2-2) has allowed just 320 rushing yards all season, an average of 80.0 per game that ranks among the best marks in the country, and the Panthers’ defense overall sits inside the top 20 nationally in points allowed (14.5 per game) and top five in yards per play. FIU’s own offense hasn’t been explosive (18.0 points per game, 126th nationally) despite solid passing numbers, but it hasn’t needed to be behind a defense that’s forced the under in three of its four games. If Jones can’t crack a front that’s shut down the run all year, New Mexico State has no proven second option to move the ball — which is exactly why the line has moved from FIU -3.5 to -6.5 since the week opened.
