To pair with Arvidsson, Tomas Hertl and Cale Makar will both have a great opportunity to find the back of the net while taking advantage of a pair of back lines that give up Expected Goals Against at a high rate. For some more information, check out our NHL betting trends page for the latest daily game odds, insight, and data.
Viktor Arvidsson
In his first year with Detroit, Viktor Arvidsson has been the Red Wings most consistent source of offense, leading the team in Expected Goals with an average of 0.55 per game.
Fortunately for Arvidsson, he will be able to build on his momentum against the Florida Panthers by attacking a back line that struggles to shield their net per their below league average mark in Expected Goals Against From High Danger Shots. With the back line incapable of walling off shots, Akira Schmid has been unable to get into a groove, averaging a Save Percentage of .889.
When in 5-on-4 Situations, Arvidsson has been the focal point of the offense, leading the Red Wings first unit in Expected Goals while generating 0.71 Shots on Goal per penalty. With Lucas Raymond and Alex DeBrincat pulling defensive attention away from him, Arvidsson will be able to anchor in front of the net, improving the quality of his Shots on Goal.
Tomas Hertl
It has been a turbulent stretch of games for Tomas Hertl with the Vegas Golden Knights center scoring just one Goal in his last seven starts. During that skid, Hertl was still able to create high quality shot attempts, averaging 0.42 Expected Goals per game.
Heading into Monday night’s contest against the Boston Bruins, Hertl will be able to continue to pressure the net at a high rate while blitzing through a back line that resides in the bottom half of the board in Expected Goals Against in 5-on-5 Play. Even with Jeremy Swayman masking Boston’s lack of production on defense with his high level of play, the Golden Knights versatility will force the Bruins goalie to scramble, widening Hertl’s shooting lanes on the outside.
In the Power Play, Hertl joins Jack Eichel, Mitch Marner, and Mark Stone in the top line, an aggressive trio that is capable of ambushing the net at multiple levels of the ice, With the Bruins struggling to keep a body in front of the puck, Hertl will be able to exploit the gaps in coverage and generate a higher volume of Shots on Goal, increasing his chances of scoring.
Cale Makar
After a hot start to the year, Cale Makar’s stick has cooled off, failing to score a Goal in his last nine games. While Makar has been able to weave the puck through traffic, the quality of his Shots on Goal has been underwhelming, averaging just 0.18 Expected Goals per game.
In a favorable matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks, Makar will be able to rifle off higher quality Shots on Goal from the blue line by picking apart a back line that ranks near dead last in Expected Goals Against in All Situations. When isolated, Spencer Knight has been unable to protect the Blackhawks net with the former Panthers goalie giving up 3.21 Goals Against per game while averaging a Save Percentage of .897.
With Nathan MacKinnon joining Makar in the back line in 5-on-4 Situations, the Avs defenseman will be allowed to move closer to the net, converting his low quality shot attempts from a distance into Shots on Goal in front of the crease.
