The Pick: Gonzaga 79, Purdue 75

We’ll take the Under based on Gonzaga’s betting data from 2026.

Game Betting Analysis

The Under seems to be worth a look here, as Gonzaga saw a 10-21 O/U record in 2026 and also enters the game with a 2-8 O/U mark when coming off four or more days of rest. As a favorite since 2026, Gonzaga is just 10-25 on the O/U with 147 total points or less in its last eight games overall. Purdue, though, makes a case for the outright win, winning its last three games against the Bulldogs. The ATS marks are a bit too close for comfort, though, with Gonzaga marking a 4-6 ATS record on neutral courts and Purdue entering with a 6-5 ATS mark. There is slightly more conviction in the total going Under based on Gonzaga’s overwhelming stats from 2026.

Deciding Factor: Gonzaga’s Frontcourt Continuity vs. Purdue’s From-Scratch Core

Gonzaga enters ranked No. 15 off a 31-4 season (16-2 in the WCC) that ended as a 3-seed loss to Texas in the second round, and the headline reason for optimism is a frontcourt that didn’t have to be rebuilt so much as reinforced. Braden Huff returns as the Bulldogs’ leading scorer from a year ago (17.8 points, 5.6 rebounds) after a knee injury cost him the final 17 games, now paired with instant-impact St. John’s transfer Massamba Diop, who posted 13.6 points and 5.8 rebounds in a high-major role last season. Sophomore Davis Fogle steps into a much bigger part after a breakout freshman year, and Mark Few’s team has been nearly automatic on this specific day — Gonzaga has won 10 straight Monday games outright and led at halftime in each of its last 14 Monday non-conference games. With a healthy Huff and a proven, ready-made frontcourt partner in Diop rather than an unproven freshman, Gonzaga doesn’t need an adjustment period to be good in the paint, and that alone should let the Zags win the possession battle against a Purdue team that does.

The Boilermakers, meanwhile, are starting almost completely over. Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer, Trey Kaufman-Renn and Oscar Cluff — the group that combined for 53.2 of Purdue’s 81.7 points per game a year ago, roughly 65% of the offense — are all gone, and for the first time since 2014-15 Purdue doesn’t have a single returning player who made a preseason All-Big Ten team. Matt Painter is leaning on Princeton grad transfer Caden Pierce, the 2023-24 Ivy League Player of the Year, and 7-foot-4 Daniel Jacobsen to stabilize things immediately, and his track record in openers is genuinely elite — 20-1 at Purdue with 13 straight wins by an average of 29.7 points. But those wins came almost exclusively at home against unranked, often overmatched opponents; this is Purdue’s first true road opener since 2020-21 and its first season-opening game against a ranked team since 1995-96, a game it lost. If Pierce’s experience and Jacobsen’s size can bridge the gap faster than a totally reshuffled roster usually does, Painter’s opener magic could carry over again — but against a Gonzaga frontcourt that already knows exactly what it has in Huff and Diop, asking an entirely new identity to form on the road against a ranked, veteran interior on night one is the harder path.
