The Pick: Pistons 111, Knicks 108

We’ll take Detroit’s spread based on head-to-head data, 2026 struggles for New York and the Knicks’ statistics surrounding road teams.

Game Betting Analysis

Both the Under and Detroit to cover are what the data points are leaning towards, so we’ll go with those. The Under has hit in seven of the last eight games for New York, including both home games already played this season. The Knicks betting stats are actually pretty straightforward, entering tonight’s meeting with an 0-3 O/U record along with an 0-3 ATS mark this season. New York has also dropped the spread in four of five meetings with the Pistons, while Detroit is 13-6 ATS when coming off a road win. Detroit is also 5-1 outright when playing inside MSG, while New York has seen the road team cover the spread in nine of 10 games.

Deciding Factor: Detroit’s Depth vs. New York’s Broken Three-Point Shot

Detroit’s 3-0 start has been built on more than just Cade Cunningham, who’s running the show at 21.3 points, 8.0 assists and 4.7 rebounds a night on a 48.9/35.3/73.7 shooting split (60.0 true shooting), and that depth is about to get tested again with the Pistons walking into Madison Square Garden shorthanded. Jalen Duren is already out at least two weeks with a hamstring strain, and Sunday’s 106-93 win over Philadelphia came with Ausar Thompson (ankle, turned it stepping on Andrew Wiggins’ foot) ruled out and Isaiah Joe (hip contusion) knocked out early — yet Duncan Robinson and Daniss Jenkins combined for 39 points and John Collins helped anchor the offense regardless. It wasn’t a one-off: two nights earlier in Miami, Paul Reed (19 points, 11 rebounds) and Robinson (17 points, five threes) carried a blowout win alongside Cunningham’s 16-8-3 blocks line, with Jenkins adding 15 points, five boards and five assists. Three different complementary scorers stepping up in three different games is exactly the validation JB Bickerstaff’s culture-first program — the one Cunningham just called “the best coach in the league” for — needs heading into a game against a Knicks team still searching for a reliable second scoring option.

The Knicks, meanwhile, haven’t lost talent — they’re the reigning champs — they’ve lost their perimeter shot, and that’s the single biggest difference between these two 0-3-versus-3-0 trajectories. After shooting 37% from three through their first two games, New York cratered to 24% from deep in Sunday’s 111-102 loss to a Paolo Banchero-less Orlando squad, with Karl-Anthony Towns going 0-for-4, Jalen Brunson 1-for-7 and Josh Hart 3-for-9; for the season they rank 18th in the league at just 32.4% from three. Brunson has openly owned the discipline issues too, pointing to his own late-game turnovers (two of his three giveaways came in the fourth quarter of a seven-turnover final period as a team) after scoring only six combined fourth-quarter points across the first two games. Mikal Bridges has been even more concerning — 4, 0 and 6 points in three games, with a team-worst -21 plus-minus against Orlando — a sign the wing New York needs to space the floor has lost his aggression entirely. The defense is actually fine (108.6 rating, 9th in the NBA), so if Brunson, Towns and Bridges simply regress back to their career shooting marks and stop gifting extra fourth-quarter possessions, the Knicks have a real path to snapping the 0-3 start at home against a shorthanded Pistons team; if not, Detroit keeps proving it doesn’t need a full roster to keep winning.
