The Pick: Lakers 119, Trail Blazers 117
We’ll take the Over as the best bet based on both team’s betting data entering, while the Lakers covering is supported by head-to-head trends when Lake Show are favorites.
Game Betting Analysis
We’re going to settle in the Over with this one, as both clubs present strong cases beginning with the head-to-head, the Over hitting in the last three meetings. Portland has scored 124 points or more in its first two games this season, scoring 115 or more in the last three meetings. The Lake Show enter on a 5-1 O/U run that dates back to the end of last season, scoring 125 points or more in their first three games this season. The winner markets given Los Angeles the slight edge, winning outright in seven straight games against Portland as the favorite – covering the spread in five straight during that span. Portland has also dropped the spread in four of five games.

Deciding Factor: Luka Doncic’s Historic Scoring Outburst vs. Portland’s Suffocating Depth
The Lakers are 3-0 almost entirely because Luka Doncic has been unstoppable, and Sunday’s eruption against Utah was the clearest proof yet: 52 points, 8 rebounds, 10 assists and 2 steals on 17-of-30 shooting (8-of-18 from three) in just over 38 minutes, scoring 13 of those points in the fourth quarter alone to erase a 47-29 first-quarter deficit and steal a 132-123 road win. It was the first 50-point, 10-assist, 5-rebound, 5-made-three game in franchise history, pushed Doncic past LeBron James for sixth on the Lakers’ all-time 40-point-game list, and made him the fastest player in franchise history to 3,000 points as a Laker (95 games, beating Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s old mark of 109). That workload matters more than usual this season since James signed with Philadelphia in free agency over the summer, leaving Doncic — with Austin Reaves (29 points in that same comeback) as his clear second option — to single-handedly cover for whatever the roster gives up elsewhere, which Sunday was a lot: L.A. surrendered 16 second-chance points and six offensive rebounds in the first quarter alone.
The Trail Blazers, meanwhile, don’t need one guy to go nuclear because they’re deep enough to beat you five different ways, and that depth has already carried them to a 2-0 start. In Thursday’s comeback win over Sacramento, Deni Avdija led the way with 26 points, Toumani Camara added 19 on five made threes, and contributions poured in from Ja Morant (12), Jrue Holiday (12), Sidy Cissoko (15) and Donovan Clingan (10 rebounds) — with Damian Lillard, back from last year’s Achilles tear, chipping in 19 of his own. That balance is exactly the problem for a Lakers team that just got boat-raced on the glass and in transition for a full quarter against Utah; Portland’s size up front (Clingan, Robert Williams III) and shooting at every position mean Doncic can’t simply outscore five problems the way he outscored one bad quarter. Scoot Henderson (ankle) is questionable and would only add scoring punch off the bench if he goes, but if Portland’s rotation keeps crashing the glass and forces the Lakers into another sluggish start like Sunday’s, this deep, two-way Blazers group has a real path to the road upset; if not, Doncic’s one-man takeover act is good enough to make Portland’s depth a moot point.
