The Pick: Spurs 117, Rockets 111

We’ll take the Under based on San Antonio stats as the home team, paired with head-to-head data.

Game Betting Analysis

The Spurs have owned recent meetings with Houston, winning three of four games outright while covering those games as well. It doesn’t help Houston’s case that the Rockets have alos lost six straight road opening games, while San Antonio has also covered the spread in six straight divisional games. Looking at the total might have more conviction though, as the Spurs have hit the Under in their last six home games – but keep in mind this game is at the Moody Center tonight (Texas Longhorns home court) and not Frost Bank. However, the Under has also hit in eight of 11 meetings – so we’ll take the total over the spread but either suffices.

Deciding Factor: Houston’s Efficient Attack vs. Wembanyama’s Shooting Slump

Houston opened its season by blitzing Dallas 128-110, shooting a scorching 53.4% from the field and 44.4% from three while getting 30 points apiece from Kevin Durant and Jabari Smith Jr., 23 points and 10 rebounds from Alperen Sengun, 16 points and 10 rebounds from Amen Thompson, and a game-high 11 assists from Fred VanVleet in his first regular-season action since tearing his right ACL last season. That kind of shooting efficiency and balanced scoring across five different players lines up well against a Spurs team whose own season opener was defined by its superstar’s historically bad shooting night: Victor Wembanyama went just 1-of-13 from the field (0-of-4 from three) in San Antonio’s 116-104 loss to Oklahoma City, the worst shooting performance of his career, missing his first 12 shot attempts before finally connecting on a reverse dunk at the third-quarter buzzer. If Houston’s offense performs anywhere close to its opening-night form against a Spurs defense that will again lean heavily on Wembanyama to protect the rim, the Rockets’ shooting efficiency becomes the clearest path to a second straight blowout win.

San Antonio, meanwhile, still has real pieces to counter with, starting with the fact that Wembanyama’s miserable shooting night didn’t come at the expense of his two-way impact, as he still finished with 13 rebounds and 6 blocks, and the Spurs got 24 points from Stephon Castle, 18 from Dylan Harper and 14 from D’Aaron Fox out of a new three-guard lineup that the team believes is still finding its rhythm. If Wembanyama’s jumper and interior scoring touch rebound to anything resembling his normal form, while that young backcourt trio continues to produce at the level it showed in the opener, San Antonio has a real chance to make this competitive against a Rockets team that will be hard-pressed to replicate a 44.4% clip from three on the road.
