For the second time since 2021, the PGA Tour will host the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club, just outside Baltimore, Md. The 50 best remaining players congregate in Owings Mills for the penultimate event of the season. Let’s inspect the odds for the BMW Championship.This event has a reputation for extreme scoring, with a mixed bag of stern tests and pure birdie fests. If 2021 is any indication, Caves Valley will fall on the extremely easy end of that spectrum. In its first foray against PGA Tour competition, a soft Caves Valley Golf Club was rendered completely defenseless, with seven players posting a score beyond 20-under-par. If history repeats, this is a venue that will reward the longest hitters and the hottest putters.Ahead, we’ll go through everything you need to know about Caves Valley Golf Club in preparation for the 2025 BMW Championship.

Field At A Glance
For the second leg of the FedExCup Playoffs, the field has been cut down from the top 70 in the FedExCup Standings to the best 50 players remaining. With no cut, we will once again see four rounds from all 50. The BMW Championship has historically hosted a field of 70, so players will perform in more exclusive company for the second straight year.As expected in the playoffs, it’s a loaded field. All eligible OWGR top-25 players on the tour will tee off. All players will vie for a top-30 position in the FedEx Cup standings after this week in order to qualify for both the Tour Championship and the full suite of signature events in the 2026 season.
The FedEx St. Jude Championship produced a great shake-up in the FedExCup standings, as Wyndham Clark, Jake Knapp, Min Woo Lee, Aldrich Potgeiter, and Jordan Spieth were knocked out of the top 50 and replaced by Bud Cauley, Rickie Fowler, Kurt Kitayama, J.T. Poston, and Jhonattan Vegas.
Captain Keegan Bradley is your defending BMW Championship winner, prevailing over Adam Scott in Castle Pines’ inaugural host event. Keegan finds himself in an auspicious position this week, as his current slump has led many to question whether or not he’s done enough to justify assigning himself play-captain duties at next month’s Ryder Cup. Patrick Cantlay will share “defending champion” honors with Keegan this week, as he was the winner the last time Caves Valley hosted this event in 2021.
Cantlay’s victory was in an epic playoff battle with Bryson DeChambeau, in which Cantlay delivered one of the greatest putting performances in PGA Tour history.
In addition to Bradley and Cantlay, Viktor Hovland, Justin Thomas, Keegan Bradley, Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, and Justin Rose join as past BMW Championship winners.
Introduction To Caves Valley Golf Club
It’s been a banner year for the golf-starved mid-Atlantic region. Caves Valley Golf Club, set in Owings Mills, Md. (just outside of Baltimore), follows Philadelphia Cricket Club, Oakmont CC, and soon-to-come Bethpage Black as parkland venues in this neck of the woods. We are somewhat familiar with Caves Valley Golf Club, having hosted it for the first time at the 2021 BMW Championship. While history has reduced Caves Valley to a pure birdiefest in which Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Cantlay tore the place apart and reached a playoff at -27 apiece, we can cut the course some slack for taking on a deluge of rain throughout tournament week. Those severely wet conditions led to lift-clean-place lies in the fairway, demonstrably easier fairways and greens to hold, and an exaggerated advantage for bombers with the longest carry distance.
Look ahead to this week’s forecast. There are showers in store on Wednesday and Thursday, but nothing quite as severe as the 2021 conditions. If that forecast holds, I still expect this to be a venue where in-form bombers who are in control of their long irons will be able to feast, but the winning score should not push too far beyond -20 this time around.
Caves Valley’s identity is in its length. The 7,542-yard par-70 course measures as the fourth longest course on the PGA Tour this season, behind The Plantation Course at Kapalua, Torrey Pines, and Quail Hollow. Similar to Kapalua, its lack of penalty for erratic drives and inviting greens complexes has still led to low scores.
If 2021 is any indication, this week sets up well for long hitters with streaky putting upside to separate.
Course Breakdown
We’ll get a new look at Caves Valley Golf Club this week. Adding 40 yards of length and converting two of its par-5s to long par-4s, it will now stand as a 7,600-yard par 70. Giving PGA Tour pros four chances to score on a par-5 has been the fast route to seeing scores push beyond 20-under par, so it makes sense that the tournament has taken these measures to scoring from getting out of hand. We saw venues like TPC Craig Ranch and The Renaissance Club simply change their shortest par-5 into a long par-4 to address those optics, but at the end of the day, this is a course where long hitters will swing freely.
Like many other venues in the Mid-Atlantic region, Caves Valley features Bentgrass greens throughout. Bentgrass has traditionally been the consistent agronomy for BMW Championship venues over the years.
A massive property tucked just outside of Baltimore, Caves Valley is an arduous walk that features many severe elevation changes and obstructed approach shots. There are six par-4s measuring over 460 yards. That yardage is partially offset by the three par-4s that measure under 350 yards, each potentially driveable depending on where the tee boxes are pushed to. Three of the four par-3s measure beyond 220 yards, all setting up for a high volume of long-iron approaches.
In 2021, a significant 60% of approaches came from beyond 175 yards, so I would expect to see an emphasis on approaches from the same range this week.
History & Comparisons
With the BMW Championship serving as a rotating course tournament with extreme differences in course setup year-over-year, this is not a week I tend to put too much stock in event history. BMW Championship events are predominantly held in the northeast on Bentgrass agronomy and come with the heightened pressure of greater purses and championship qualifying implications.
However, this week’s game will be demonstrably different from Castle Pines or Olympic Fields, which hosted the last two BMW Championships, so I will be placing a heavier emphasis on Comp Course History.
From a historical standpoint, this week isn’t one where I find myself overreacting to a small sample size of just four rounds in 2021, where the course was drenched in rain throughout tournament week. Patrick Cantlay won at -27 despite ranking just 28th in the field in SG: T2G, so I’ll focus more on the prevailing trends from the week.
With Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, and Jon Rahm surrounding atop the leaderboard, I expect to see in-form bombers rise to the top by week’s end once again in 2025. Cantlay, McIlroy, Sungjae Im, and Sam Burns are the only players in the field this week who finished inside the top 20 in 2021.
As far as pure bombers’ paradises go, I’m looking at The Plantation Course at Kapalua, Memorial Park GC, TPC Craig Ranch, Congaree Golf Club, Detroit GC, TPC Toronto, The Renaissance Club, Vidanta Vallarta, and Valhalla Golf Club as top overall comp courses. Each of these courses is especially advantageous to players with plus distance off the tee, as the lack of penalty for misfires rewards those with the shortest clubs.
On a secondary level, I believe this event will play most similarly to the 2022 BMW Championship at Wilmington Country Club, where Patrick Cantlay also emerged victorious. For the Tom Fazio connection, I’ll also look at performance at Quail Hollow and The Summit Club, which have also rewarded the longest hitters.
Combine performance across this list, and the top-10 players in Comp Course History here are Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Taylor Pendrith, Akshay Bhatia, Collin Morikawa, and Matt Fitzpatrick.

When in doubt, start modeling with SG: T2G to prioritize the top-trending players leading into the week. I’ll be doing just that in a week like this with such limited prior course history data. The top-10 players in SG: T2G are Scottie Scheffler, Chris Gotterup, Kurt Kitayama, Tommy Fleetwood, Russell Henley, Keegan Bradley, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Matt Fitzpatrick,
and Ryan Gerard.
Approach play is pivotal in any given week. Even though these greens are slightly above average in size, the most precise players with their irons will be best equipped to generate the highest volume of birdies. The top-10 players in SG: APP entering this week are Scottie Scheffler, Daniel Berger, Viktor Hovland, Akshay Bhatia, Sepp Straka, Kurt Kitayama, Shane Lowry, Hideki Matsuyama, Patrick Cantlay, and Ryan Fox.
Driving Distance is a big, nice-to-have at Caves Valley, with the course standing well beyond 7,500 yards. As such, it proved to produce the highest concentration of approach shots from beyond 175 yards. There are 10 players who rank top-20 in terms of both Driving Distance and Prox: 175+: Scottie Scheffler, Kurt Kitayama, Ryan Fox, Xander Schauffele, Ben Griffin, Ryan Gerard, Robert MacIntyre, Ludvig Aberg, Taylor Pendrith, and Sam Stevens.
The ideal player for this week should be above average in SG: T2G, Comp Course History, Driving Distance, SG: APP, and SG: Putting (Bent). Six players meet each of those criteria: Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, Robert MacIntyre, Corey Conners, and Xander Schauffele.

Player Spotlight: Xander Schauffele ()

This year hasn’t been one that Schauffele would’ve expected for himself after being derailed early on due to injury. Despite that, he still finds himself in the second leg of the playoffs with a good chance to advance to East Lake with one more strong performance, as he currently ranks 42nd in the standings.
A pair of Major championships in 2024 has made Xander’s resume look a whole lot better, but a playoff win seems to be one of the largest omissions. Xander has been a factor at the BMW Championship throughout his career, finishing in the top 10 in each of his last three appearances.
Inaccuracy off the tee has been the biggest drawback of Schauffele’s game in 2025, as his metrics in all other areas, including Driving Distance, SG: Approach, SG: ARG, SG: Putting, are on par with his 2024 metrics. That makes Caves Valley the ideal BMW Championship host venue, as it is a setup where power should prevail over precision. Schauffele remains one of the best long-iron approach players in the world, and is the only player to rank top-five in terms of Driving Distance, Prox: 175+, and Comp Course History.
If that form continues, this figures to be the perfect breakout spot for Schauffele in 2025, as he looks to secure a tee time at East Lake and regain his confidence leading into the Ryder Cup.

To no surprise, Scottie Scheffler remains the man to beat, according to my model this week. Fresh off of a T3 finish where he fell one stroke short of a playoff without his best stuff at TPC Southwind, Scheffler continues to have me betting scared, and likely to continue betting in the outright markets without him. After Scheffler, my model’s top 10 consists of Rory McIlroy, Kurt Kitayama, Matt Fitzpatrick, Ben Griffin, Xander Schauffele, Tommy Fleetwood, Chris Gotterup, Viktor Hovland,
and Harry Hall.
When odds open on Monday, I’ll look to center my card around Xander Schauffele and Cameron Young, depending on where odds ultimately fall.
