The Pick: Hawks 121, Cavaliers 119
We’ll take Atlanta tonight based on head-to-head data along with Cleveland’s current ATS struggles.
Game Betting Analysis
We’re going with the Atlanta moneyline despite the current slump the Hawks find themselves in. Atlanta has yet to win at home this season, but now enters a matchup with Cleveland in which the home team has won outright in six straight games. Cleveland also enters the game having yet to cover the spread through its first four games (0-3-1), in fact, Cleveland has failed to cover eight straight games going back to a season ago. So while the Hawks have lost three straight and still searching for their first home win, the data backs them tonight. We’ll abide.

Deciding Factor: Cleveland’s Balanced Scoring Attack vs. Atlanta’s Point Charity for Teams
Cleveland’s three-game winning streak has been powered by a different lead scorer almost every night, not one guy carrying the load. Donovan Mitchell’s 26 points keyed the overtime win over Minnesota, Evan Mobley’s 24 points and 12 rebounds led the way against Washington, and in between Peyton Watson (22 points), James Harden (19 points, 9 assists in the Minnesota game; 16 points, 6 assists against Washington) and Meleek Thomas off the bench have all turned in real complementary numbers. In the Washington win alone, five different Cavaliers scored in double figures. That kind of depth means Atlanta can’t simply key on one or two names to slow Cleveland down.
Atlanta’s defense, meanwhile, has been the actual problem behind its 2-3 start, not a lack of scoring punch. The Hawks have allowed at least 120 points in four of their five games — 125 even in their win over Orlando, 121 at home to Houston, 120 on the road at Houston, and 129 to Miami in the losses — with their 128-81 blowout of Charlotte standing as the only game they’ve held an opponent under 100. Atlanta has actually been scoring plenty itself in that stretch (132, 128, 114, 110, and 117 points across the five games, with Jalen Johnson posting a near triple-double of 12 points, 11 assists and 9 rebounds against Miami), which is why the record doesn’t look as bad as a leaky defense alone would suggest. But a unit that’s given up 120-plus four times already is walking into a bad matchup against a Cleveland offense that just scored 121 and 127 in its last two games. If Atlanta’s defense can’t tighten up against that kind of balanced attack, this could get away from them the way the Miami and first Houston games did; if the Hawks’ own offense keeps outscoring the leaks the way it did against Orlando, they have enough firepower to turn this into a track meet they can win.
