👑 Blake Snell – LAD/SP/MVP ($18,000)
I’ll start this single-game slate for Game 3 of the ALCS by paying up for Blake Snell as MVP. Snell was excellent in an injury-plagued season for the Dodgers, putting up a 1.90 ERA in 42.2 innings. He struggled with command in his lone postseason start vs the Braves, issuing five walks in 3.2 innings, but when he has his control in check, the ceiling is extremely high, making him worth a look here.
I always like to put a pitcher at MVP, so going with Snell over Robert Gasser feels like a no-brainer, even at the more expensive cost.
Brice Turang – MIL/UTIL ($8,400)
Brice Turang had a terrific season for the Brewers, slashing .268/.366/.450 with 21 home runs and 19 stolen bases in 582 at-bats. He’s also been terrific in the NLCS, going 3-for-5 with three runs, one homer, and two RBI in two games so far.
We’re getting a slight discount on Turang because it’s a lefty-vs-lefty matchup vs. Snell, but there’s a chance that the Dodgers’ lefty won’t go deep into this game. Plus, it could reduce Turang’s ownership rate, making him an appealing contrarian play in large-field tournaments.
Teoscar Hernandez – LAD/UTIL ($7,200)
Teoscar Hernandez put up a .267/.334/.425 slash with 16 home runs in 442 at-bats this year. He’s been pretty effective in the playoffs so far, including one home run, three runs, and three RBI in six games.
I like the matchup against lefty Robert Gasser, as Teoscar has a 148 wRC+ vs. lefties this season (92 wRC+ vs. righties). We get him at a reasonable cost at $7,200, making him worth a look in this favorable spot.
Andy Pages – LAD/UTIL ($7,000)
Andy Pages had a breakout year for the Dodgers, slashing .274/.343/.468 with 23 home runs and 13 stolen bases in 511 at-bats. He’s been productive in the playoffs, including two two-hit games in his last four.
As a right-handed bat, Pages is much better vs. lefties (146 wRC+) than righties (113 wRC+), so this is a good time to fire up this outfielder. It also helps that we’re getting a reasonable cost at $7,000 here.
Josue De Paula – LAD/UTIL ($5,000)
There are reports that Dodgers manager Dave Roberts may sit Shohei Ohtani in this game, as he’s been struggling mightily at the plate as he plays through injury. That means it’s a great opportunity to play their top prospect in Josue De Paula, who hit 27 homers and stole 31 bases at Double-A this season.
De Paula could be the spark plug this lethargic offense desperately needs. If he ends up sitting, you can swap him for Tommy Edman, who crushes lefties and will get one here in Robert Gasser.
Joey Ortiz – MIL/UTIL ($4,200)
Joey Ortiz is just a punt play, where we’re looking for salary relief to make this lineup work. He sat in Game 2, but should be back in the lineup against a lefty in Blake Snell.
Ortiz has a career 101 wRC+ vs. lefties (84 wRC+ against righties), so this is the right time to ride with the Brewers’ infielder.
