To pair with Caufield, we round out the card with Jakob Chychrun and Martin Necas who are both in a favorable position to score while their linemates pull defensive attention away from them. Cole Caufield
Since the start of the regular season, Cole Caufield has been able to consistently pressure the net, generating 0.37 Expected Goals while averaging nearly four Shots on Goal per game.
In a favorable matchup against the Washington Capitals, Caufield will face minimal resistance in his efforts of attacking the net while weaving the puck through a back line who resides near the bottom of the board in Expected Goals Against in All Situations. Logan Thompson will also be playing on the second half of a back-to-back, potentially affecting the speed of his cuts across the crease which will open up wider gaps beside him.
In the Montreal Canadiens first Power Play unit, Caufield drops back to the blue line, giving him the ability to crash through a lane when it opens up, isolating Thompson in front of the net. If Charlie Lindgren gets the start instead of Thompson, reduce the size of your wager.
Jakob Chychrun
On the other side of the ice, Jakob Chychrun has been aggressive in his efforts of creating Shots on Goal from the Capitals back line, leading the team with an average of 3.50 per game.
Heading into Wednesday night’s contest against Montreal, the quality of Chychrun’s Shots on Goal will drastically improve with the Canadiens back line struggling to wall off shots per their below league average mark in Shots Blocked per game. With his back line allowing their opponents to ambush the net from a far distance, Jakub Dobes has been unable to find his footing, giving up 4.44 Goals Against per game.
When in 5-on-4 Situations, Chychrun is accompanied by Alex Ovechkin, a future hall of famer who still commands defensive attention in the twilight years of his career whenever he takes the ice. With the Canadiens shading their coverage towards Ovechkin, the width of Chychrun shooting lanes on the opposite side will widen, making it easier to convert his shot attempts into Shots on Goal.
Martin Necas
After scoring just two Goals in his first five games, Martin Necas was able to double his output by finding the back of the net twice in last night’s 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars.
In the second half of a back-to-back against Dallas, Necas will be able to continue to light the lamp while Nathan MacKinnon forces the Stars to stretch out their coverage, creating more room in the middle for the Avs forward to exploit. Even with Jake Oettinger playing at a very high level, the Avs versatility will force the Stars goalie to pull away from the net, making him vulnerable to getting beat when he is unable to successfully scramble to the other side.
In the Power Play, Necas shoulders a heavier workload while opposing back lines are drawn towards MacKinnon, leading the team in Expected Goals with an average of 0.18 per penalty. If you want to diversify your risk on Necas, place a smaller wager on him to score the first Goal as well.
