Best Bet: O56.5 (-110) at BetMGM

Score Prediction: Utah 31, Houston 28

The Pick: Utah 31, Houston 28

We’ll take the Over based on both school’s 2026 betting data along with Utah home games as a favorite in the month.

Game Betting Analysis

The Over seems to be the pay based on the betting data we have, so let’s explore there. The Over has hit in eight of nine home games for Utah when playing as the favorite in October. Both schools also enter this game with O/U records favoring the Over, Houston is 5-2 O/U this season while Utah is 4-2 O/U. The Utes have scored 33 points or more in four of six games this season, while Houston has scored 35 points or more in four of six games as well – while allowing 28 points or more in three of five games as well. While Utah is 5-1 ATS this season, Houston has covered the spread in seven straight conference road games – so we’l stick to the total for this one.

Houston-Utah Odds (Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under)

Deciding Factor: Connor Weigman’s Low Turnover Efficiency vs. Utah’s Backfield Versatility

Houston’s case starts with how clean Conner Weigman has been running this offense: 134-of-198 for 67.7% (a career high), 1,770 yards, 20 touchdowns against just 2 interceptions, a turnover rate that’s dropped from roughly one pick every 33 attempts over his last two seasons to one every 99 this year. He torched Oklahoma State for nearly 400 total yards and five touchdowns last time out, and Houston’s offense overall ranks 10th nationally at 486 yards per game, with a complementary ground game (220.4 yards per game, 5.3 per carry) led by Tulane transfer Makhi Hughes (98 carries, 465 yards, 4.7 YPC, 3 TD) that keeps defenses honest. That efficient, balanced attack is walking into a Utah pass rush that simply isn’t getting home: the Utes’ defensive ends have combined for zero sacks through their first several games, the team ranks a pedestrian 52nd nationally at 2.2 sacks per game, and their lone takeaway-generating pressure has come almost entirely from interior players (DT Karson Kaufusi and LB Elijah Ellis, two sacks apiece). Utah’s pass defense was also picked apart for 333 yards by Kansas backup Isaiah Marshall just weeks ago and sits in the bottom half of the Big 12 against the pass in conference play, which lines up poorly against a quarterback playing the most mistake-free football of his career.

Utah, meanwhile, counters with its own efficiency problem for Houston to solve. The Utes rank 14th nationally in adjusted EPA per play on offense behind dual-threat starter Devon Dampier (68.6% completion, 1,412 yards, 15 TD, 4 INT, plus 198 rushing yards and 3 rushing scores) and a two-QB wrinkle that plugs backup Byrd Ficklin in as a receiver/running back averaging 6.9 yards per touch — a package designed specifically to create matchup problems defenses can’t scheme for in advance. That versatility is squaring off with a Houston defense that has real statistical holes: the Cougars rank just 81st nationally in defensive success rate, 111th in opponent EPA per play, and 96th in yards allowed per play, numbers that suggest a unit that can be moved on consistently rather than one that forces negative plays. Utah has also won five of its six games by two touchdowns or more, showing it can pull away once it gets rolling. If Weigman keeps protecting the ball against a pass rush that hasn’t proven it can disrupt anyone, Houston has a real path to the upset in Salt Lake City — but if Utah’s EPA-efficient, multi-dimensional attack exploits Houston’s leaky defensive numbers the way Colorado and Kansas exposed other opponents, the Utes should be able to control this one at home.
