From Cutter Gauthier to Jason Zucker, there are no shortage of productive scorers who are in a great position to find the back of the net while locked into a matchup against an underwhelming back line. If you have not already, check out our NHL betting trends page for the latest daily game odds, insight, and data.
Cutter Gauthier
After scoring a pair of Goals earlier in the year, Cutter Gauthier’s stick has cooled off, failing to light the lamp in his last seven starts. Even during Gauthier’s cold stretch of play, the Anaheim Ducks forward has been productive, generating 0.38 Expected Goals while leading the team in Shots on Goal per game.
Fortunately for Gauthier, he will have a great opportunity to get back on the sheet against the Philadelphia Flyers by taking advantage of a back line that ranks in the bottom five in Expected Goals Against in All Situations. Especially with Dan Vlader struggling to brush aside regression, giving up 3.15 Goals Against per game.
When in the Power Play, Gauthier moves to the blue line while Beckett Sennecke shifts to the left wing, allowing him to play off the puck while patiently waiting for a lane to open up. With the Flyers struggling to properly shift their coverage, Gauthier will be able to crash down to the net at a consistent rate, leading to a higher volume of shot attempts in front of the crease.
Jason Zucker
In his season debut against the Flyers, Jason Zucker was able to make an immediate impact by scoring a Goal in 12 minutes of play. In his brief appearance, Zucker was aggressive, generating 0.39 Expected Goals.
In a favorable matchup against the Washington Capitals, Zucker will be able to build on his momentum by relentlessly attacking a back line that struggles to stay in front of the puck per their below league average mark in Expected Goals Against in 5-on-5 Play. When forced to make quick cuts across the ice, Logan Thompson will be unable to match Zucker’s output, making him vulnerable to getting beat on the outside.
In 5-on-4 Situations, Tage Thompson has taken a back seat to Zucker with the Buffalo Sabres forward leading the team in Expected Goals with an average of 0.21 per penalty. With Thompson pulling defensive attention away from him, Zucker will be able to convert his shot attempts into Shots on Goal at a higher rate, increasing his chances of scoring.
Joel Eriksson Ek
Even though Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy’s odds of scoring a Goal are far shorter than Joel Eriksson Ek’s, the Minnesota Wild forward has been nearly just as productive as his linemates in regard to pressuring the net, rivaling the duo in Expected Goals with an average of 0.62 per game.
Heading into Saturday night’s contest against the Seattle Kraken, Eriksson Ek’s aggression will be rewarded by ambushing a back line that ranks near dead last in Expected Goals Against From High Danger Shots. While Philipp Grubauer has been able to mask his back line’s lack of production with his play in net, negative regression is looming large with Boldy and Kaprizov forcing the Seahawks goalie to pull away from the crease.
Eriksson Ek has also been able to match Boldy and Kaprizov’s production in the Wild’s first Power Play unit, keeping his workload intact. With the Kraken forced to stretch out their coverage, expect Eriksson Ek to continue to exploit the gaps his linemates provide and score his third Goal of the season.
