To round out the card, we turn our attention towards Pavel Dorofeyev and Tomas Hertl with the duo battling it out against a pair of back lines that give up Expected Goals at a high rate. Before Thursday’s slate gets underway, check out our NHL betting trends page for the latest daily game odds, insight, and data.
David Pastrnak (Bruins vs. Penguins) Goal Odds
Even with the Boston Bruins struggling to play at a competitive level on offense, David Pastrnak has been able to thrive, averaging 0.35 Expected Goals while generating 3.56 Shots on Goal per game.
Fortunately for the Bruins captain, Pastrnak will be able to continue to keep the team afloat against the Pittsburgh Penguins by picking apart a back line that ranks in the bottom half of the board in Expected Goals Against in All Situations. Especially with Arturs Silovs in the midst of a cold stretch of play, averaging a Save Percentage of 0.878 in his last two outings.
In the Power Play, Pastrnak moves to the back line, giving him the ability to observe the coverage before crashing down to the middle when a lane opens up. When isolated in front of the net, Silovs will struggle to match Pastrnak’s aggression, making it difficult to wall off his Shots on Goal.
Pavel Dorofeyev (Rangers vs. Flyers) Goal Odds
After being traded away to the New York Rangers in the offseason, Pavel Dorofeyev has been able to quickly pick up from where he left off with Vegas, generating 0.43 Expected Goals per game. With Dorofeyev in the fold, the Rangers have been able to round back into form, climbing into the top half of the board in Expected Goals For.
In a favorable matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers, Dorofeyev will be able to build on his momentum by taking advantage of a back line that struggles in coverage per their bottom five mark in Expected Goals Against in 5-on-5 Play. With the Flyers harshly regressing on defense, Joseph Woll has been unable to stand his ground, giving up over three Goals Against per game.
When in 5-on-4 Situations, Dorofeyev has been the engine that drives the Rangers first unit, leading the group in Shots on Goal with an average of 0.88 per penalty. With the Flyers struggling to defend the net, Dorofeyev will be able to rifle off a higher volume of shot attempts, improving his probability of scoring.
Tomas Hertl (Golden Knights vs. Red Wings) Goal Odds
Since the start of the regular season, Tomas Hertl has been consistent in his efforts of pressuring the net, leading the Golden Knights in Expected Goals with an average of 0.43 per game.
Heading into Thursday night’s matchup against the Detroit Red Wings, Hertl will be able to generate high quality Shots on Goal for the full duration of the contest while skating circles around a back line that ranks below league average in Expected Goals Against From High Danger Shots in 5-on-5 Play. Even with Daniil Tarasov playing at a high level, the Golden Knights versatility will keep the Red Wings goalie consistently moving, widening Hertl’s shooting lanes.
With Mitch Marner and Jack Eichel anchoring behind Hertl in the Power Play, the Red Wings will be forced to stretch out, creating more room in the middle for the Golden Knights center to exploit. If John Gibson gets the start in net instead of Tarasov, add more to your position.
