The Pick: Heat 123, Timberwolves 120
We’re taking a couple of props for Klay Thompson based on his history against Minnesota as a favorite.
Game Betting Analysis
We’re going into a rare market for this one, as the ATS and total trends are all over the place. Minnesota has gone Over the total in five straight games but we’re given a large 242.5 total to work with for tonight, as the Under has hit in three of four meetings. The T’Wolves have also failed to cover the spread in 4 straight season opening games, while Miami has seen home teams win outright in five of six games. So we go Miami, then? Well, the road team has won four of five meetings with Minny winning the last three head-to-heads. Minnesota has also covered four of six meetings with Miami. So where do we turn? Klay Thompson, who does well against Minnesota historically. He has scored 12 points or more in a remarkable 28 straight games against Minnesota as the favorite, connecting on three or more 3-pointers in 14 straight games in the same spot. With no conviction in the popular betting markets, we succumb to the player prop market.
Timberwolves-Heat Odds (Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under)
Deciding Factor: Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Miami Debut vs. Anthony Edwards’ Heat-Killer History
Miami opens its season on ESPN with arguably the most talented frontcourt in franchise history taking the floor together for the first time, and it does so at full strength — Bam Adebayo is off the injury report entirely, with only Vladislav Goldin listed as questionable, meaning Giannis Antetokounmpo makes his Heat debut alongside a healthy Bam rather than easing in around an absence. The numbers behind that pairing are staggering: Giannis is the only player in NBA history to average at least 24 points, nine rebounds, five assists and a block per game for his career (in both the regular season and playoffs), he’s shot 65.1% in the paint for his career while scoring 14.5 points per game there (third-most in 30 years of shot-location data), and last season he posted career highs in effective field goal percentage (63.6%) and true shooting (65.8%) with a staggering 79% of his shots coming at the rim. He’s also led the league in fouls drawn per game in each of the last seven seasons, a weapon that should only be amplified playing off Adebayo’s own interior gravity. Add in reports he averaged nearly a point per minute during Miami’s up-tempo preseason, and the Heat have every incentive to let their new superstar duo simply overwhelm a Minnesota front line early and often as -1.5 home favorites.
Minnesota, meanwhile, brings its own problem for Miami in Anthony Edwards, who owns a 9-3 career record against the Heat including three straight wins — a personal house-of-horrors matchup Miami hasn’t solved even with its roster retooled. The Timberwolves have also reshaped their own backcourt by acquiring LaMelo Ball from Charlotte, pairing him with Edwards and Rudy Gobert in a new-look lineup built around the physicality that’s long been Minnesota’s calling card against this specific opponent, even as they’ll be without Donte DiVincenzo (recovering from the Achilles tear he suffered in the 2026 playoffs) for perimeter depth. If Edwards’ personal dominance over Miami and Minnesota’s physical identity translate early against a Heat team still finding its chemistry with a brand-new superstar in the fold, the Timberwolves have the formula to spoil the home opener as +102 road underdogs. But if Giannis and Bam’s combined interior force proves too much for a Wolves front line adjusting to its own new faces, Miami’s two-way star power should be enough to deliver a statement win to open the season.
