The Pick: Lakers 120, Warriors 114
We’ll try the Over based on head-to-head data, specifically inside Crypto.com Arena.
Game Betting Analysis
The Over seems to be the safest data point to get behind, so we’ll start there. The Over has hit in a remarkable eight of 10 meetings between Golden State and Los Angeles, along with 11 of the last 14 head-to-heads. Los Angeles has actually gone Over the total in six of seven home games when facing the Warriors. There’s more conviction in that then the ATS market as well, as the Lake Show have covered three straight games against the Warriors but Los Angeles has also failed to cover the spread in eight of nine season openers, while losing outright in six straight season opening games against division opponents.
Warriors-Lakers Odds (Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under)
Deciding Factor: Luka Dončić’s LeBron-Less Takeover vs. Golden State’s Vanishing Depth
The Lakers open their first season without LeBron James since 2018 as 7.5-point favorites, and the roster behind that number looks the part. Luka Dončić is now the unquestioned engine after averaging 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists last season on .476/.366/.780 shooting, flanked by Austin Reaves (23.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 5.5 assists) and a completely overhauled frontcourt anchored by Walker Kessler, whom the Lakers landed from Utah in a $130 million sign-and-trade this summer after Kessler posted shot-blocking numbers that put him in rare statistical company with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Shaquille O’Neal. With Quentin Grimes slotting in on the wing and a restructured bench featuring Collin Sexton, Matisse Thybulle and Jarred Vanderbilt, Los Angeles enters this opener deeper, healthier and more talented top-to-bottom than at almost any point in its recent post-LeBron transition, and a Dončić-Kessler pick-and-roll combination that Golden State simply doesn’t have the size to match inside is squarely at the center of that advantage.
Golden State, meanwhile, is already down two rotation pieces for the entire season — Jimmy Butler tore his ACL in January and Moses Moody ruptured his patellar tendon in March, both ending their 2025-26 campaigns early — and now Brandin Podziemski, who played all 82 games a year ago, is also out for this opener with a back injury. That leaves Steve Kerr leaning even harder on Stephen Curry, who tweaked his ankle at Sunday’s practice but is expected to play after scoring 24 points on 7-of-14 shooting in his most recent outing, a 115-110 loss to the Clippers. If Dončić and Kessler control the paint from the opening tip and Golden State’s thinned-out wing rotation simply can’t match the Lakers’ size and shot-creation on both ends, Los Angeles should cruise in its first LeBron-less opener in nearly a decade. But if Curry’s ankle holds up and he gets into an early rhythm the way he did in Golden State’s last outing, the Warriors have shown they can hang around behind their superstar alone even with the roster around him stretched thin.
