Best Bet: APP +10.5 (-110) at DraftKings

Score Prediction: James Madison 32, Appalachian State 23

The Pick: James Madison 32, Appalachian State 23

We’ll try the App State spread based on underdog trends within the state as well as head-to-head data.

Game Betting Analysis

This one is tough, but we’ll test our luck with the App State spread, with the big setback being an obvious 6-1 ATS mark from James Madison this season. However, Appalachian State also enters 4-2 on the ATS this season, covering two of three meetings with James Madison while the underdog has also cover three of the last four head-to-heads. Also, a trend that overshadows both teams successful ATS record this season is App State covering 10 straight games when playing in the state of North Carolina as an underdog. Backing a win outright over James Madison isn’t ideal, but the +10.5-point spread with the above data seems to be a fair market to test. The Over/Under is murky, so we’ll reside here, but App State is only seeing 39.3 points per home game this season and we’re given a 56.5 line. App State has gone Under in seven of eight games against schools from Virginia, too.

Deciding Factor: James Madison’s Top-15 Rushing Attack vs. Appalachian State’s Leaky Run Defense

James Madison rolls into Thursday’s Sun Belt showdown at 7-0 (4-0 in-conference) off a 49-22 demolition of Georgia State in which the Dukes piled up 515 total yards and 250 rushing yards on just 41 carries (6.1 per rush). George Pettaway has been the engine of that attack, running for 119 yards and a touchdown in that win to extend his streak to four straight 100-yard rushing games — he now sits at 767 yards and 7 touchdowns on 109 carries (7.0 per attempt) through seven games. JMU’s 223.7 rushing yards per game ranks 14th nationally, and the Dukes are averaging a staggering 42.9 points per game behind a two-quarterback attack that’s clicking in different ways: Camden Coleman went 13-of-19 for 185 yards and two touchdowns against Georgia State, while JC Evans has handled short-yardage work, scoring twice on the ground in that same game. That ground attack lines up against an Appalachian State run defense that just allowed 253 yards on 52 carries (4.9 per rush) to Coastal Carolina and is surrendering 137.8 rushing yards per game on the season — a matchup that tilts heavily toward Pettaway and JMU’s offensive line extending the Dukes’ 12-game Sun Belt winning streak.

Appalachian State, meanwhile, enters at 4-2 off a wildly inconsistent two-game stretch that exposes real issues on both sides of the ball. Just six days before outlasting Coastal Carolina 35-32 — a game in which the Mountaineers’ defense allowed 516 total yards and 6.6 yards per play — App State was held to just 3 points and 158 total yards in a 10-3 home loss to Old Dominion, with starter Henry Hasselbeck throwing a backbreaking interception in the final two minutes and a botched shotgun snap turning into a safety. The win over Coastal Carolina still came with warts: starting QB Malachi Singleton (12-of-14, 151 yards) lost a fumble at the goal line before halftime, and the Mountaineers needed four Jaquari Lewis rushing touchdowns and a fourth-quarter Henry Hasselbeck touchdown pass just to hold off a Coastal Carolina offense that piled up 298 passing yards. App State’s defense is allowing 21.8 points per game (54th nationally) and has already given up 827 rushing yards on the season, which lines up poorly against a JMU offense that just dropped 250 rushing yards on a Georgia State defense playing Power Four-caliber competition. If Appalachian State’s defense shows up like it did against Coastal Carolina rather than the version that smothered nothing against Old Dominion’s offense, Pettaway and the Dukes have every reason to keep this one comfortable as -10.5 favorites; but if the Mountaineers’ offense that found 516 yards against Coastal Carolina carries over to Thursday night at Kidd Brewer Stadium, App State has the firepower to at least keep this from turning into a rout.
