To pair with Hughes, Tyler Seguin and Tomas Hertl have both benefited from playing alongside productive scorers, putting them in a great position to score while exploiting the gaps on the opposite side. Jack Hughes
Even though Jack Hughes is averaging nearly 0.60 Expected Goals per game, the New Jersey Devils center has struggled to capitalize on his quality scoring opportunities, scoring just two Goals in seven games.
Luckily for Hughes, he will be able to get back on the sheet in a divisional matchup against the Washington Capitals by taking advantage of a back line who currently ranks dead last in Expected Goals Against in All Situations. Especially with Logan Thompson showing signs of regression while struggling to mask the lack of protection he receives from his back line, averaging nearly three Goals Against per game.
In the Power Play, Hughes joins his brother Luke Hughes in the back line, giving him the ability to pick apart a lane when one opens up, isolating Thompson in front of the net. When left unattended, Hughes will be able to convert more of his shot attempts into Shots on Goal, increasing his chances of scoring.
Tyler Seguin
With Tyler Seguin back at full health, the Dallas Stars forward has been able to make an immediate impact on offense, generating 0.30 Expected Goals while leading the team in Shots on Goal per game.
Heading into Saturday night’s contest against the Chicago Blackhawks, expect Seguin to pressure the net from the opening puck drop by blitzing through a back line who struggles in coverage per their bottom two mark in Expected Goals Against in 5-on-5 Play. The Blackhawks inability to defend the net has also made it difficult for Spencer Knight to stand his ground, giving up 3.52 Goals Against per game while averaging a .890 Save Percentage in six starts.
In 5-on-4 Situations, Seguin is accompanied by Jason Robertson, Mikko Rantanen, Roope Hintz, and Miro Heiskanen, an all star cast of scorers. While this does affect Seguin’s usage rate, the versatility he receives from his linemates creates more space in the middle for him to attack, improving the quality of his Shots on Goal.
Tomas Hertl
Since the start of the regular season, Tomas Hertl has been the Vegas Golden Knights most consistent source of production on offense, leading the team in Expected Goals with an average of 0.51 while generating 2.44 Shots on Goal per game.
In a favorable matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hertl will be able to continue to rifle off high quality Shots on Goal at a consistent rate while weaving the puck through a back line who resides in the bottom half of the board in Expected Goals Against From High Danger Shots. Even with Arturs Silovs playing at a high level, the Penguins goalie will be playing on the second half of a back-to-back, affecting the speed of his cuts which will open up wider shooting lanes while sluggishly scrambling between the pipes.
Like Seguin, Hertl is also surrounded by lethal scorers in the Golden Knights first Power Play unit, making it easier to pressure the net while ambushing the middle of the Blackhawks stretched out coverage.
