The Pick: UCLA 21, Wisconsin 20
Game Betting Analysis
We’ll go with the Under, as both schools present cases for ATS coverage. The Under has hit in seven straight games for Wisconsin when playing in October. The elephant in the room, though, is the Wisconsin O/U conference record, which sits at a stunning 1-10 over the Badgers last 11 against Big Ten foes. Wisconsin is actually 5-12 to the Under over its last 17 games overall, while also seeing the Under hit in seven of 10 games as the underdog. While UCLA has covered its last six games dating back to last season, Wisconsin has covered four of five road games as an underdog along with five of seven games coming off a win. We’ll stick to the total here.

Deciding Factor: UCLA’s Season-Altering QB Injury vs. Wisconsin’s Shaky Run Defense
No. 12 UCLA (5-0, 3-0 Big Ten) hosts Wisconsin at the Rose Bowl still riding the high of knocking off Oregon in what the program called “arguably its biggest win in recent history,” but the Bruins will be without the quarterback who helped get them there. Nico Iamaleava is out for the season with a torn ACL suffered in that very win, handing the offense to Cal Poly transfer Ty Dieffenbach, who has thrown all of six career FBS passes (3 completions, 43 yards, 1 touchdown) in relief duty and carries a modest FCS résumé (1,305 yards, 9 touchdowns, 9 interceptions, 58.6% completion last season). The news was significant enough to move the spread from as high as 4.5 points down to just 2.5 in UCLA’s favor. The Bruins do still have a legitimate strength to lean on in workhorse running back Wayne Knight, who has racked up 548 yards on just 71 carries (7.7 yards per attempt) with 11 total touchdowns, and a defense that ranks top-10 nationally in both adjusted opponent EPA per play and opponent success rate.
Wisconsin, meanwhile, arrives red-hot and rested, having won four straight since an opening-week loss to Notre Dame and coming off a bye that has the Badgers “as healthy as they can be,” with Jaylon Domingeaux possibly making his season debut. Much of that turnaround traces to Old Dominion transfer Colton Joseph, a dual-threat quarterback who was named Big Ten co-Offensive Player of the Week after accounting for four touchdowns in a 31-3 rout of Michigan State and has combined for 597 passing yards, five touchdown passes, one interception and two more rushing scores across his two most recent outings. Luke Fickell’s defense has its own issues stopping the run, but Wisconsin’s path to the upset runs through making a UCLA team now relying on a first-time starter one-dimensional rather than trying to simply outscore Wayne Knight and company. If Dieffenbach struggles in his first extended look against UCLA’s top-10 defense while Wisconsin’s offense keeps clicking the way it has for a month, the Badgers have a real path to the road upset; but if Knight and UCLA’s defense can control the game plan and keep Joseph from beating them with his legs, the Bruins should still have enough to escape with the win despite the upheaval at quarterback.
