Later in the day, we turn our attention toward Matt Boldy and Anders Lee with both forwards in a position to thrive while skating circles around a back line that struggles to defend the net. Jackson Blake (Hurricanes vs. Jets) Goal Odds
After winning the Stanley Cup last year, the Carolina Hurricanes have been able to continue to play at a high level, ranking second in Expected Goals For. Jackson Blake’s aggression on offense has helped the Hurricanes pressure the net at a high rate, averaging 0.44 Expected Goals while generating 2.87 Shots on Goal per game.
Heading into Sunday’s contest against the Winnipeg Jets, Blake will have a great opportunity to find the back of the net by taking advantage of a back line that resides in the bottom half of the board in Expected Goals Against in All Situations. Especially with Stuart Skinner steadily regressing after a hot start to the year, giving up nearly three Goals Against per game while averaging a Save Percentage of .899.
In the Power Play, Blake is accompanied by Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov, a pair of lethal scorers that command defensive attention when they hit the ice. With the duo stretching out the Jets coverage, Stuart will be left unprotected, improving the quality of Blake’s Shots on Goal in front of the net.
Matt Boldy (Wild vs. Capitals) Goal Odds
After failing to find the back of the net in six straight games, Matt Boldy was able to snap his streak by sending one past Ilya Sorokin in his previous outing. During his cold stretch of play, Boldly was still efficient, averaging 0.60 Expected Goals per game.
In a favorable matchup against the Washington Capitals, Boldly will be able to build on his momentum by attacking a back line that struggles in coverage per their below league average mark in Expected Goals Against in 5-on-5 Play. Even with Logan Thompson walling off shots at a high rate, Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson Ek will help keep the Capitals goalie moving, creating wider gaps in the outside for Boldy to exploit.
When in 5-on-4 Situations, Boldy moves to the back line, allowing him to play behind Kaprizov to help survey the coverage before blitzing through a lane. If Charlie Lindgren gets the start in net instead of Thompson, add more to your position.
Anders Lee
While Anders Lee has rifled off shot attempts at a low rate, the Utah Mammoth forward has still been able to generate high quality Shots on Goal, leading the team in Expected Goals with an average of 0.36 per game.
Fortunately for Lee, the Mammoth forward will be able to consistently pressure the net on Sunday night while battling it out against the Philadelphia Flyers who currently rank in the bottom ten in Expected Goals Against From High Dangers Shots. When exposed, Dan Vlader has been abysmal in the Flyers net this season, giving up 3.26 Goals Against per game in seven starts.
With the Flyers struggling to keep a body in front of the puck, position regression is also looming large over Lee while in the Power Play, leading to an uptick in his usage rate. With fewer bodies guarding the net, Lee will be able to generate a higher volume of Shots on Goal, improving his probability of scoring.
