Drake Maye, NE/QB ($6,500)
After a slow start to his third season, last year’s Super Bowl runner-up Drake Maye has stepped up his play as the season approaches the halfway mark. The former UNC star has 12 TDs over his last four games and will look to keep rolling against AFC East rival Miami. Sunday marks Maye’s fourth appearance against the Dolphins, with the 24-year-old going 2-1 in the first three meetings. He has racked up 643 passing yards, 4 TDs, and just 1 INT across those games and will look to add to those numbers as New England hopes to bounce back from last week’s loss.
The Dolphins picked up their first win of the season last Sunday against the Jets but do not appear motivated to compete this year, with the future clearly the priority. While the secondary has overperformed, Miami still ranks 31st in opponent passing success rate. With a league-high 33.5% of New England’s passing plays resulting in gains of 10-plus yards, expect several big-play opportunities for Maye and this offense. He has been a top-four fantasy QB in each of the last four games, and there is no reason to expect him to slow down against a Dolphins team that has struggled all season.
Derrick Henry, BAL/RB ($7,200)
After a blistering start to his 11th season, 32-year-old Derrick Henry has understandably slowed down over the past few weeks. His mini-slump coincided with the injury to superstar QB Lamar Jackson, who returns this week after missing Weeks 5, 6, and 7. We will see if having Jackson back under center helps clear running lanes for the star RB, who has rushed for just 103 yards across the last two games combined. King Henry has found the end zone only once since Jackson’s injury, yet he still ranks third in the NFL with 8 TDs this season.
He now faces the AFC favorites in the marquee matchup of the weekend as Baltimore travels to take on the Buffalo Bills. Buffalo emerges from its bye week at 5-1 with the best offense in the NFL. The Bills’ 32.8 PPG is impressive, but a big reason they have needed to score so much is their poor defensive play. They rank 30th in the league, allowing 28.5 PPG, and are giving up more than 100 rushing yards per game and the third-most fantasy points to running backs. With a dynamic playmaker like Jackson back in the lineup, Henry looks set to feast on a Bills defense that has struggled to slow down anyone, much less another explosive offense.
Blake Corum, LAR/RB ($5,000)
Rams backup RB Blake Corum is an elite budget option in Week 8, with the second-year back commanding more carries as his play continues to impress. Kyren Williams will still see the bulk of the offensive snaps, but Corum has slowly begun to eat into that share and produce when called upon. Last week, he finished with one more carry than Williams and saw extra time after the lead back lost a fumble in the third quarter. Both runners rushed for over 90 yards and a TD, and a similar game plan is possible with injuries continuing to plague the Rams offense.
Corum is sure to see an uptick in playing time heading into the Los Angeles derby against the Chargers on Sunday. LAC is the lone winless team in the league, with poor play on both sides of the ball fueling a nightmarish start. They rank 21st against the run, conceding 123.8 rushing yards per game for the season and more than 130 over the last three games. Corum’s 4.9 yards per carry ensures that, even with lower or split volume, he should remain efficient and produce when given the chance.
Tee Higgins, CIN/WR ($6,700)
Bengals star WR Tee Higgins has emerged as the team’s top receiving threat this season in a surprising development. The 27-year-old finished the Week 7 victory with 6 receptions for 148 yards and a TD, marking the fourth time in six games he has posted 5-plus receptions and 90-plus yards. His 8.3 targets per game lead the team, and he could see even more volume with superstar teammate Ja’Marr Chase nursing an ankle injury heading into the contest. Higgins and the Bengals have won back-to-back games, and a matchup against the 1-6 Titans bodes well for an offense in good form.
Tennessee ranks in the bottom half of the league in most defensive statistics, including air yards per game. The Titans secondary ranks 24th, conceding 233.0 passing yards per game heading into Week 8. QB Joe Burrow should also be far more comfortable in the pocket after Tennessee traded All-Pro DT Jeffery Simmons during the week. With the Bengals’ run game as inconsistent as it has been, look for Higgins to keep feasting as the lead man in Cincinnati’s aerial attack.
Khalil Shakir, BUF/WR ($5,600)
Expect Bills WR Khalil Shakir to serve as one of Josh Allen’s primary weapons on Sunday in a game that is likely to become a shootout. Buffalo emerges from its bye week with significant injuries to two of its main receiving threats, WR D.J. Moore and TE Dalton Kincaid. Their availability is worth monitoring, but regardless, Shakir should see his fair share of targets as one of the most dynamic weapons on the league’s top offense. He also has a solid matchup against a Ravens secondary that has specifically struggled against slot receivers like him.
Baltimore enters the contest conceding the seventh-most points to slot WRs and will have a hard time containing Shakir’s YAC ability. He ranks sixth among all WRs with 198 YAC this season and is a big-play threat any time he touches the ball. The Ravens have been among the league’s best at stopping the run, which should push Buffalo toward the air, and Shakir and the Bills’ receivers will play a big role in what should be an offense-heavy game.
Germie Bernard, PIT/WR ($4,900)
The Steelers may have found one of the more underrated WRs in this year’s draft in Germie Bernard, who has become a staple of the Pittsburgh offense. The second-round pick was thrown into the fire after several key injuries at his position and now gets his second shot at his AFC North rivals on Sunday afternoon. The 22-year-old snapped a brief two-game streak of 6-plus catches and 80-plus yards last week in Paris, but should be able to get back to those numbers with WRs Roman Wilson and Michael Pittman Jr. still out on Sunday.
Bernard has stepped up as the WR2 alongside D.K. Metcalf and quickly become a favorite target of veteran QB Aaron Rodgers. Over the last four games, he has posted a 22.7% target share and a 64.2% route participation rate. His 24% designed target share has made him a prime option for Rodgers in the short and intermediate areas, with the 42-year-old QB connecting with Bernard for 4.8 yards after the catch per reception. A massive yardage game is unlikely in the Steelers offense, but Bernard has proven himself as a solid possession receiver and a great budget option for Week 8.
T.J. Hockenson, MIN/TE ($4,600)
T.J. Hockenson has been a bright spot in a relatively quiet but undefeated Vikings offense. Minnesota will look to stay perfect through eight weeks against a familiar foe in NFC North rival Detroit. The Lions secondary has been an elite fantasy matchup for opposing tight ends all season, and over the past five games they have surrendered the most receiving TDs, the most fantasy points per opportunity, and the fifth-most yards per target to the position. Hockenson missed Week 5 with a concussion but returned in Week 7 following the bye with 4 receptions for 35 yards and a TD.
He enters Week 8 as the TE9 in fantasy, and his 18.9% target share ranks sixth at the position. He leads Minnesota with seven red-zone targets, catching five of them and scoring twice. QB Kyler Murray has quickly built a strong rapport with the dependable tight end, and Hockenson’s 19.8% first-read share speaks to how often he is looked to in the short and intermediate areas. His 5.3 targets per game and red-zone usage make him a safe option against a struggling Lions secondary.
Bhayshul Tuten, JAC/RB ($5,900)
Bhayshul Tuten and the Jacksonville Jaguars return from their Week 7 bye looking to bounce back from a tough defeat to the Houston Texans. Tuten was a standout in that game, finishing with 2 TDs, but he has been steady all season and should continue that trend against a Colts squad in freefall. Indianapolis traded star defensive lineman DeForest Buckner this week, and Tuten should find even more room to operate against the 22nd-ranked run defense. The Colts enter Week 8 conceding 124.4 rushing yards per game and will now face one of the toughest runners in the league this season.
Tuten ranks in the top five in missed tackles generated (27) and averages a whopping 3.6 yards per carry after contact. Fresh off the bye, he should have no trouble putting up the steady numbers we have seen from him all season. He now has four consecutive games with 85 or more scrimmage yards and will serve as the primary back even with RB Chris Rodriguez Jr. eating into his carries at times. Tuten also sees a steady workload in the short passing game, with multiple receptions in five straight games, including four in his last game before the bye.
Rams D/ST ($3,500)
We round out our Week 8 lineup with the Rams defense, taking on their Los Angeles neighbors. The Rams will look to keep Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers winless when they host the league’s only remaining winless team in the late afternoon. LAC’s offense has struggled badly despite bringing in offensive guru Mike McDaniel as coordinator this offseason, scoring a league-low 15.0 PPG. The play of their $260 million man has not helped, with QB Justin Herbert tied for the league lead with 8 INTs.
The Rams defense should be able to get to Herbert, who has been sacked 21 times through the first six games. The Chargers’ offensive line will get some reinforcement with RT Joe Alt back, but other injury designations along the line bode well for a Rams unit that has had success pressuring QBs. Los Angeles has averaged 3.8 sacks per game over its last four games, and pressuring a QB prone to mistakes through the air should play right into the hands of one of the best secondaries in the league.
