To pair with Kadri, we turn our attention to William Nylander and Anders Lee with both forwards battling it out against a pair of back lines who underwhelm in coverage. For more information, check out our NHL betting trends page for the latest daily game odds, insight and data.
Nazem Kadri
Even though Nazem Kadri has yet to score a Goal, the Colorado Avalanche forward has still been productive with his time on the ice, generating 0.41 Expected Goals while averaging nearly one Assist per game.
Heading into Monday night’s contest against the Philadelphia Flyers, Kadri will have a great opportunity to score his first Goal of the season by taking advantage of a back line that struggles to defend the net per their bottom five mark in Expected Goals Against in All Situations. Especially with Dan Vlader incapable of walling off the Avs relentless assault at the net, giving up 3.58 Goals Against per game.
In the Avs first Power Play unit, Kadri moves to center while Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar operate behind him on the back line. With the duo peppering the Flyers net, Kadri will be able to anchor on the opposite side of the shot attempt, putting him in a great position to score off of a rebound.
William Nylander
After averaging nearly one Goal per game in his first six games, William Nylander has fallen into a rut, failing to find the back of the net in his last three starts. During that span, Nylander has been aggressive, generating 0.46 Expected Goals per game.
In a favorable matchup against the San Jose Sharks, Nylander will be able to snap his scoreless streak by aggressively attacking a back line that resides near the bottom of the board in Expected Goals Against in 5-on-5 Play. Even with Alex Nedeljkovic playing at a high level, Auston Matthews will force the Sharks goalie to scramble between the pipes, creating wider shooting lanes for Nylander to exploit.
When in the Power Play, Nylander is accompanied by Kirill Marchenko and Gavin McKenna, forcing the Sharks to stretch out in coverage in an attempt to smother the Maple Leafs explosive unit. With more room in the middle, Nylander will be able to rifle off shot attempts in front of the crease, improving the quality of his Shots on Goal.
Anders Lee
Since the start of the regular season, the Utah Mammoth have been able to consistently pressure the net, rivaling the Avs and Carolina Hurricanes at the top of the board in Expected Goals For. Anders Lee has played a major role in the Mammoth’s resurgence on offense, leading the team in Expected Goals with an average of 0.40 per game.
With the Pittsburgh Penguins on deck, Lee will be able to continue to keep the Mammoth competitive by skating circles around a back line who ranks dead last in Expected Goals Against From High Danger Shots. Arturs Silovs has also harshly regressed after keeping a clean sheet in the Penguins season opener, giving up 16 Goals Against in his last four starts while averaging a Save Percentage of 0.875.
In 5-on-4 Situations, Lee is the focal point of the Mammoth’s second unit, leading to a higher usage rate. With the Penguins struggling to keep a body in front of Lee, the Mammoth forward will be able to generate a higher volume of Shots on Goal, increasing his chances of scoring.
