The Pick: UConn 76, Michigan 69
We’re taking the Under based on the Huskies’ betting statistics when facing the Big Ten.
Game Betting Analysis
We’ll go with the Under as the best play here for UConn’s stats strictly. The Huskies have seen a 135 total points scored or less in 12 straight games when facing the Big Ten. We get 145.5 on the total line, so we’ll take the 10 point difference in favor of UConn’s data against Big Ten schools. The ATS is a bit murky as well, while UConn went 11-20 ATS during last year’s regular season. However, the Huskies bounced back during the NCAA Tournament and actually held a 9-2 ATS record over their last 11 games on a neutral court. We’ll stick to the Under.
UConn-Michigan Odds (Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under)
Deciding Factor: UConn’s Defense and Glass Dominance vs. Michigan’s Perimeter Slump and Frontcourt Uncertainty
No. 4 UConn looked every bit like a team built to avenge last April’s national title loss in its season-opening 86-46 demolition of Gardner-Webb on Nov. 2 at a sold-out PeoplesBank Arena, a win that gave Dan Hurley his 200th at the school. The Huskies held Gardner-Webb to 25.5% shooting from the field, won the rebounding battle 46-28, and out-scored them 42-10 in the paint while piling up 21 fast-break points to just 3. Na’jai Hines, the Seton Hall transfer who led the Big East in blocks a season ago, posted a career-high double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks), and the scoring was balanced behind Braylon Mullins’ 20 points (4-for-7 from deep) and Duke transfer Nik Khamenia’s career-best 14 points off just his first game in a UConn uniform. Silas Demary Jr. ran the show with 8 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals, and Jayden Ross, the team’s new 3-and-D wing, finished a team-best plus-41 in only 29 minutes. That defense-and-rebounding identity — the exact formula Hurley has leaned on through two prior national titles — is precisely the blueprint that could trouble Michigan again on Friday, especially with UConn entering as the higher-ranked team at No. 4 against Michigan’s No. 16.
The Wolverines, meanwhile, showed real cracks in their own opener, an 84-68 win over Oakland in which they shot just 21% from three-point range and surrendered 21 offensive rebounds to a MAC-level opponent — a number that would get run up badly against a UConn team that just posted an 18-rebound margin against Gardner-Webb. Michigan got encouraging debuts from Roddy Gayle Jr. and Trey McKenney (17 points apiece) and five-star freshman big J.P. Estrella (15 points, 12 rebounds), but starting center Moustapha Thiam sat out that opener with an illness and his availability for the Boston rematch is unclear, which would only compound Michigan’s frontcourt rebounding problem against a UConn front line already playing with a chip on its shoulder from April’s title-game loss. If Thiam remains out or limited and Michigan’s shooters can’t shake their cold start from deep, UConn’s rebounding edge and suffocating interior defense give the Huskies a real path to exacting revenge in the rematch at TD Garden; if Thiam returns healthy and Michigan’s offensive-rebounding issues were simply an early-season blip against an overmatched Oakland front line, the defending champs have more than enough size and shot-making to validate their higher offseason pedigree.
